What Two-Way Radio do you have, and would you recommend it? I'm in the market...

I'm looking to pick up a pair of 2-way radios... ya know like a Motorola TalkAbout or whatever... just looking to see who has what and if they like it. I'll mainly be using this in the car, but would be taking it elsewhere when convenient. Just looking for something not too expensive with a decent range.
Amazon has the Motorola T6500R for like $46... that sounds good, but it gets such mixed reviews. I also looked at Midland radios but dont know much about them.
So if you've got any input here, please share!
Thanks,
Bryan

I have a set of Cobra 2 ways that I bought from walmart. They are good for about 2 miles if unobstructed. In towns and such its more like 1 mile. I also have a set of Motorolas. I prefer the Cobras but not because of performance issues - the Cobras just feel better ergonomically. I give the Motos out to the rest of my guys who dont have the radios.

They all work together too, so dont worry about mixing and matching. Im sure you knew that already though. Some have extra channel features so be aware of that. We always just use channel 13.

It's a little more expensive, but WELL worth it. Most any of the Garmin "Rino" series, the 110 is a basic one and sell for right around $200.

na, definitely not interested in breaking $75 on these... they're just to use here and there and i dont need perfection.
i'm looking hard at the Motorola T6500R on Amazon for like $46 shipped.

and 03slomax thanks for the offer, not sure where you work or what you carry but let me know... thanks.

In NY you have to have a license for a 5 mile or more radio (unless that has since changed from when I worked at Staples 4 years ago). I dont know why but I assume it has something to do with construction zones. If you have ever gone past a blast site you may notice there are sometimes bright orange signs that state "turn off all radios and electronic devices" - they arent talking about your car am/fm radio. Its for truckers' CBs and high power radios like a foreman would use.

yeah i think technically you're supposed to have a license for a lot of these... their line of sight ranges are 10-15 miles, but actual is more like 1-2 miles in real world usage.
the reviews on these things are all over the place, but i have a feeling its people buying $50 or $75 radios and expecting them to sound as good or better than a cell phone when they're miles away... not gonna happen.

I believe thay cannot be more powerful then 5 watts. But the full size motorola radios we used in the construction industry were significantly more powerfull. I thought that the motorola 12 mile (rated) walkie talkies worked great for only like 80 bux a pair. They have a nice display, vibration, pager, loud clear speakers, and cool ringtones.
BTW I have some kenwood 2 way radio's that I didn't give back to my previous employer, I need 220v to charge them but I can also use AA's. They are pretty cool as well but kinda beat up.

Actually it's because some blast caps are set off by radio. You don't want to acidently set-off on of those with someone still in the hole

I'm working at 7 World Trade Center right now. We are not allowed to use high powered radios at all. So we just use nextels.

I work in corporate construction. Multi-million dollar jobs. One mistake could cost alot. So we only use the best--cobra radios are defiantly the best. You can dial in a code so noone can interfear with your frequency. And they are pretty durable.

That's friggin off the wall...I wonder why they would go off VIA radiowave...and not by-wire-detonation...
