This thread is about kids today, politics and the future of the country, come on in!

Why is proper grammar such a rarity online? Really, is it that difficult to communicate in a manner that other humans would be able to follow? Is capitalization and punctuation so much of a burden that it must be avoided at all costs? Is basic proof reading and, at least, a general resemblance to correct spelling asking too much of today's youth?

I'm not speaking specifically of this forum, though, like all forums, we have our share of grammatical criminals. Where are we headed as a nation when our up and coming people are unable to fashion a simple paragraph?

I pose these questions to you:

Are computers contributing to the downfall of childrens ability to comunicate via the written (typed) word?

Is this trend affecting areas out side of the internet, or is it just an anomaly online?

How did we get to the point that an adult (18+ year old) feels they are unable to adequately express themselves without the use of swear words?

Is the US school system broken beyond repair, or will the trend of feelings over facts eventually reverse itself so that those who fail are held accountable opposed to being given a hug and a pat on the ass?

Will the outsourcing of jobs that require less education, coupled with continued outsourcing within the tech industry, eventully lead to an unavoidable period of overwhelmingly high unemployment?

Will we see in our lifetimes a swing away from the litigious society we have become, and usher in a new era of personal accountability?

Could a third political party based upon common sense, not focused on one particular issue (environment, religion, etc...), ever realistically hope to have a presence within our legislature?

Don't hate me, but you spelled communicate, burden, resemblance, grammatical, anomaly, beyond, and realistically wrong...haha.

Yup, sure did. I'm not the best speller, however, all I'm asking for is a resemblance of proper spelling, I can deal with an incorrect vowel here and there. If the forum had a spell check, I would use it.

Though, I'm a little dissapointed that you read the whole post, and all your post contained was spelling corrections. I would really like to see what people in the age bracket of our community have to say about these issues.

And, as you can probably tell, I agree 100%. When I have conversations on AIM, I never use capitalization or punctuation, but I always try to spell things correctly. However, when I'm typing something that goes on a forum for everyone to read, I don't think it's too much to attempt to resemble well spoken or written english.

Well yes as proper grammar is slowly going down the drain anymore. yes kids are still being taught it in school and everything but its the outside world that really has an impact on kids grammar. For example IMing people over the computer, texting people with the phone, daily conversations, everything is always shortened and made to be said faster with less fill. yea i know the importance of proper grammar and know that it is very important. As said before i also try to make proper sentences and use punctuation correctly.
Yea when im talking on AIM or texting someone I will not use proper grammar using periods, commas etc..
But if I were in a job environment I would put my grammar skills to use and do everything properly, its just rarely seen that people use proper grammar in any other case.

And Alachua it does have a spell check.. top right of the post box.

I happen to be a teacher in one of the broken US public school systems. I helped you out, just like I would one of my students. No hugs or pats in my class. Also, your use of resemblance to in the first paragraph, while spelled correctly, would not fly in my class either.

I just have one question for you. If language is a just a way of communication, for people to understand eachother, what is the difference if everything is capatlized and punctuated. If you can understand the general drift then our language is working perfectly.

cause not ER-1 gets it. its lazy grammar and not needed. if you cant say words in their entirety and correctly then dont say them at all. i dont want to hear "ya son im gon 2 tha mall ta hook up ma peeps na mean" ......no i dont.

its just one step closer to becomming one of those third world tribes that use clicks and grunts to communicate

but how many times on this forum or when your talking to someone do you actually hear that. it basically that america's society is in such a fast pace that we try to cut time. so instead of using full words we try to cut some corners. Why do you think our country is becoming so much fatter? We're lazy and in a rush. Were not hurting our language at all.

Exactly the point of my previous post. If everybody took the time to create a published work out of every email, post on a forum, etc., what would be the point? It is just shorthand being used in an appropriate place and time.

No, but seriously. I may not be the best in grammar or spelling, but I sure make an effort and make it easy to read atleast. Is it that hard? No. People are just lazy I guess?

This is not true. I was communicating with this Filipino girl on AIM the other day and I couldn't understand half of what she was typing. I had to ask her to explain a lot of it to me, her reply was common get with the program. Then I typed in "FF3" and she asked what that was. Just because a certain group of people understand a certain type of shorthand typing does not mean everyone will get it.

The world is coming to an end as we know it. They put "bootylicious" in the dictionary, I rest my case.

Part of Speech: adjective
Definition: sexually attractive, esp. in the buttocks
Etymology: booty + delicious
