My motor ready to go back in! Well...... almost

***UPDATE, PAINTED PICS ON PAGE 2***

Heres some pics of my motor I finished a month ago. Waiting for my new oil pump to arive (thats why the front cover isn't on). Also getting ready to paint the irons tomorrow (preping it today). After that just need to polish up the aluminum bc it became dull from sitting for awhile and slap on everything else. Woot, I'm so excited. You can see my port job in 2 of the pics two and if you dont know what your looking at... trust me, their bigger. I'll keep the rest of the specs a secret until I'm finished . I wish I had pics of the assembly process but didn't have the digi at the time. But have MANY pics of the tear down and port preping work if wanted. The blue stuff on the motor is hylomar and red stuff is assembly lube if anyone asks. Sorry for the crappy camera and yes thats my foot .

So did you get a street port or a full out bridge port? If its a bridge, that thing is gonna scream! Not only screamin fast, but loud as hell, LOL. Nice work man.

Saabs... such silly cars. The ignition isn't even in the right place lol. j/k I like saabs bc they are unique.. like a rotary

Its a Large street port. Bridge port would lack in low end power that I wanted to keep. I was thinking of doing a half bridge but was too scared to do it on my first engine rebuild lol

Alot of people don't realize that bridge ported rotaries are N/A. THey are all about extreamly excessive overlap. And a turbo bolted to the exhaust port would ruin all of that.

I am excited to see this thing get done. What turbo are we talking about here If it were me...R85

Nice man! Another 7 reborn! One day I'd like to do some porting on the motor that I'm runnng now or maybe even practice on the extra motor I have sitting in my locker at work.

Good luck with it. Hope to see it on the road sometime.

I don't know I've seen alot of T2's that have halfies or a full bridge done to them. I know of one guy right now making 407 @14psi on a pt67 on a half bridge. I forget what the A/R is on the turbo though.

Yeah, it's possible. But a street ported motor with that turbo would make the same amount of power.

I had a long disscusion with Jim from JPR motorsports when we sat down to decide what we were gonna do with my car. He explained that bridge porting and boost dont mix. Cause you want the motor to have as little backpressure as possible. I really wanted to go all motor with a full bridge port. But, then I took a ride in a bride ported motor....not for me. It's like driving a YZ125 on the street. I don't know how people do it.

can you explain a bit about what we're looking at in the photos? dual/twin rotor right? thats about all i can identify...
thanks...

All rx7's are 2 rotors. You are looking at the exhaust ports in the one picture. With the four intake ports in between them. I'v dropped many bolts inside them stupid things. The rotors are located inside the silver housings.

A 20b is very expensive to put in. I believe if requires new subframe, firewally mods, and some other stuff.

Yeah, we all think the ignition is needlessly over engineered, but what can you do.

Ok paint masta, now explain what a street port is and what sort of power gains you'll be looking at. Also any environmental impacts, (will it pass emissions)? I may be getting a NA FC, and even with only 2700 lbs I don't think 140 hp is gonna quite be enough. :p

A "street port" is a minor port modification that changes the size and shape of the intake port openings inside the motor. This is not to be confused with just boring out a hole, because the shape of the port determines the timing of the engine. Think of it as the cam lobes of a piston engine. So by doing this modification you can change the advance in port opening and the duration of opening. You are limited however in how far you can change this due to coner seals and oil seals. These seals run along the surface of where you can port and if the port is too large the seals will hit the edge of the hole and break off causing unwanted problems to say the least heh. The solution to this is a "bridge port" which a second hole is created above the oil seal track. This second hole is conjoined with the intake port but creating a bridge for the oil seal to run against.

An N/A FC is also alittle different being that it has split intake ports (6-port motors). The second half of the port has a flap that opens during high RPM to extend port timing (kinda like V-tec). But there is still room to port for alittle extra power.

How much power determins which port modification is done (mild street port, aggeresive street port, bridge port, half bridge port, J-port, and the big one peripheral port). There are of course drawback to each one of these mainly being reliability and durability. Larger being more likely for something to go wrong. Power also is determined by who ports it and if they port the shape correctly. Theoretically my guess on power gain can be anywhere between 50-300hp(with supporting mods). But its hard to say what port size makes alone.

Porting an engine is definatly NOT environmental friendly but hey... neither is a rotary in the first place. People have passed with a mild streetport but it isn't easy. Luckily for me, I am a mechanic and have an emission licence and have a pretty good feeling that my car will pass .

I hope I answered your questions. Anyone want to know more check out those sites I listed. Or just ask .
