Since We're constantly getting smacked for being "off topic" in threads of the "off topic" area of the forum, i figured i'd start a thread that was solely to banter off topic to each other...

but let me ask, if we were able to make a java chat room would that make you happy? for those of you at work would you be able to access it through the forum? and do you think that would help take the 'chatroom like convo' off the forum?

I think it would be a cool addition, but I do not think it would eliminate the convos on these forums because I don't think it all ness. takes place all at once you know what I mean?

Like I know I'll check the boards while in the middle of working...and then post when I get a chance. If it was a chat room, then I wouldn't be able to see what everyone else was or is talking about, because I can't just sit there and watch that chat room ya know?

Cool idea though.

Honestly, why lock OT threads as long as they are not homes for personal attacks?

Its off topic for a reason...that is the chit-chat room.

I'm still not sure how you can lock an off topic thread..then link to the off topic rules...

would you like me to rename the 'off topic' area something more like 'other'? because its is for all the other stuff, but is not intended to go off topic in. if you want to talk about goat tails or venetian blinds thats cool, we just ask that you stick to the topic originally posted.

if you're gonna do chat bry,.. please please please make it an IRC channel. you can use a java front end on the site, and still give people the option of using their favorite client

I definately wont be getting rid of any soon but once they are all grown up and space becomes an issue I may have too. off-topic/other is kind of the same thing. I think you worrying about people going off on a tangent and a couple people who "know" each other ****ing around is a waste of your, and our, time.

It shouldn't be policed and shut down unless it has degraded into personal attacks, flame-fests, or whatever else that is deemed to be able to cause problems off the forum. Since we all live relatively close the peace should be kept. But I think shutting down off-topic threads for going off-topic is

have a moderator keep track of current threads, someone to deal with any of the above mentioned problems and delete or fix the problem. But leave the harmless tangent threads alone

thank you for your well thought, mature response. this is the kind of feedback i would beg for. just wanted to point that out so others can see an example of a good argument that gets through to us (as opposed to something with lots of typos or cursing or insulting the mods or just not making any decent points at all).
i'm discussing the things mentioned above regarding OT right now with the other mods and hopefully we'll be able to make some changes in the near future that will leave everyone happy.
