87 rx7 turbo II build it or leave it

so i got an 86 rx7 with the rotary 1.3 liter turbo engine. good news, perfect body. no rust. no dents or dings. just faded paint from sitting. bad news, blown engine and waisted turbo. so heres my thing... should i build this or swap out the engine for something better? and how much hp could i get out of this engine?

not sure how handy you are. but you could probably swap that rotor for an ls series engine. if you did it all yourself it would be pretty cheap

If you have a reliable daily driver and enough time, money, mechanical know-how to take on a project car then go for it.

Really it comes down to what you want to do. Rotaries are good motors and can put out good power, but have a tendency to not be that reliable and cost you money down the road. Or you could swap in an LS v8 and have it cost a bit up front but have a good amount of hp stock and have better reliability. You could put another 4 cyl in there as well but I haven't seen to many of them done. That would have to be something to research.

you can pick up a 5.3l junkyard motor...$300-$700. they come in everything that GM made from trucks to cargo vans so they are a dime a dozen. clean it up with fresh stuff for another $200-$300 or just drop it in as is. or go with a ls1-2-3 for a little more cash and more power.

see i was actually throwing around the idea of a 2jz swap because i love the 1/2jz engines power and reliability. but i'm not too sure yet. alot of people on this forum and a few people i know around cincinnati keep sayin a carburated v8 swap would be cheapest and eaiest to swap/tune. i'm already rethinking the whole idea of even having the car... because i don't make that great of money. i might just rebuild it and get it rnning for the time being and then figure out what i wanna do with it from there.

i did some research and kinda actually like this idea. it would be really cheap and it wouldn't run too bad a hp for the little car. i'll keep posted on what i'm going to do

u could just buy my setup and have a drop in 500whp car!! lol

Honestly the rotary can be made reliable and fast but it would cost more money, lx isnt a bad option but u could build a sweet little 250hp ish 13bt fairly cheap.

any kind of carb engine is easy because its cheap, doesnt take a lot of money to make power, and easy to wire.

most swaps are half assed and look like ****. people think they can do it cheap and usually end up not finishing it and ruin the car in the process. if you have some kind of mechanical skills you can rebuild it yourself and save a lot of money that way.
how much power do you want to make. with the stock turbo, you can make 250 hp without pushing it hard or spending a lot of money and able to runs 12s in the quarter mile and be faster most of the swapped motors you're thinking about.

Very few swaps are ever done right because of all the little things adding up quickly. I vote keep the motor, learn about the rotory, and build a solid car or sell it for something else.

what is your garage? and this doesn't seem like a bad idea considering i don't know rotary at all. i'd like to run 300hp at the least. i also like the idea of buying your setup... drop in 500hp hell yea. lol and this is an 87 i double checked with my buddy. i swear he said 86 but aparently it is an original 87 turbo II with another turbo II engine put in this one, whatever that matters. i wouldn't mind maybe hittin you up on this build though.

I would be glad to help man, keeping a rotary in an rx7 is going against the grain nowadays lol. I would luv to sell u my motor but it may be a little more than u want to spend. Could also be a little much for a daily driver but either way hit me up and we can brainstorm lol. My cell is 8564952502 hit me up whenever.

NRS 1-piece 3mm seals, good EMS, better injectors and a decent turbo with all the supporting mods, and you are easy 500RWHP. If you wanna go balls deep and shoot for 800RWHP you might wanna get the Guru e-shaft with center needle bearing.

I hate rotaries, they ruined my life. Don't do it unless you have too much free time on your hands.
