I'm 98% sold on this, for this price...

Nikon D70s w/ 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 G-AFS ED-IF DX Autofocus Lens, $899.95

I think you should get this so I can borrow the 55-200mm lens...

If we go up to NY today, we're going to that store.

A word of caution to anyone else looking to purchase a digital SLR online:
READ THE RESELLER RATINGS/REVIEWS ON THE STORE/SITE BEFORE YOU PURCHASE!!
If you use Froogle or any other price-searching sites, you will most likely find several listings for less money from businesses that are, simply stated, a complete scam.
This includes:
infinitiphoto.com, bestpricecameras.com, jandkcameras.com
expresscameras.com
geniuscameras.com
42photo.com

I found the D70s w/ lens at expresscameras.com for $740, but luckily I read those reviews before doing anything.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to order it via phone/internet rather than driving up there?

You pay shipping charges but not tax/gas/tolls.

That's what I said (and 8.375% tax on $800 is a big difference)...
However, he doesn't want to wait, he wants to take the train I think, and I haven't been to NY in at least 10 years (and want to stop by the grandparent's apt 3 miles from there before the sale is finalized in the next month or so). Who knows if we're going, but I know that if I do, it'll be solely for looking.

Anyway, where are all the photo buffs with opinions on cameras??

I use to sell digital cams @ Circuit City so I'll try my best. From what I remember the SLR was a great camera if you picked up the kit. The kit included a filter, bag, extra rechargable batteries, pretty much made the total price just under a cool $1k.

I have sold 4 of these and everyone wanted the kit. Just getting the camera itself without any attatchments has it's cons. The lens it comes with is a 1.6x lens-conversion (unimpressive). There is also no spot-meter, but the shutter speed and all around responsiveness of the camera is very impressive and fast and also lightweight. Canon and Nikon are two very good companies when it comes to digital photography. The only problem I had with the Nikon was how small the view finder is, also I find it too "simple".

So, it all depends on what level of photography you are going for. If you are entry level and want a starter type camera I would suggest the Nikon. If you have an idea on what you are doing and are already experienced with these types of cameras then go with the Canon.

yeah i'd like to restate what marc just said... when it comes to buying camera equipment, if it sounds too good to be true i guarantee it is. there are about a million camera shops out there but only 2 or 3 i would buy from online because most will 'bait and switch' or they will sell you gray market goods without letting you know that... just stick to the reputable sellers and do it that way.
B+H is a very good very large shop, but i bet you can get the same exact price at a Ritz or wherever else right around the corner too... unless you actually want an excuse to go to NYC. let me know what you decide before you go cause i might be able to help suggest a few places locally.
as for the cameras... they are both nearly identical. pretty much every nikon/camera camera is very similar especially on the consumer level. they are in direct competition with each other and as a result their products are quite similar... so with that said, go put both of them in your hands and see which you prefer. thats really what it comes down to most of the time, how the camera feels in your hand.
