This is stupid and this is why:

1. Most people don't care since they are just going to take it to a shop to get fixed anyway.
2. The people that don't take it to a shop to be fixed either have a tool that can read the codes IE an iPhone/Andriod phone with Torque and a bluetooth OBD2 transmitter, or will just go to Advance Auto Parts or Autozone and have it read for free. Not to mention if you dont' know the code you can simply Google it and find the most likely symptoms and basic diagnosis instructions FOR FREE.
3. Adding this feature will just have people that don't know what they are talking about argue with mechanics like they know what they are talking about. It won't do a thing to stop dishonest mechanics as it isn't that hard to pull a wire and make another sensor fail. They will find a way to still generate the income(see all the new fees in the banking industry if you don't belive me)
4. It will just make cars cost more and do nothing more. All the info is already out there. If people are too lazy to seach for it that is on them.
5. It is bad enough that we have to have tire pressure sensors that make cars cost more to buy and maintain all becuase people are too lazy to walk around there car when they get gas every week.

I will not sign it because the REAL solution is to educate consumers and make them be responsible for their actions.

Not signing this. It's not that hard to go to AAP or AutoZone and have them scan you're car for you.

Consumers do not understand the intricacies of the automobiles they drive. This would not be education it would be a nightmare to those of us who work in the service industry and understand how clueless the consumer is.

If you saw P04401 Evap Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow, on your dash would you feel educated? Would it help you fix it? Perhaps make you thing you could diagnose a purge circuit fault, a vent circuit fault, or somehow give you the instant knowledge to use tools and equipment your are completely unaware of?

Things like this are why normal people drive cars and technicians fix them. This opens up more trouble of people not in the know attempting to do things they are not capable of...downward spiralling into cluster-f**k.

Goodnight.

Stroker, obviously it's not going to magically turn otherwise clueless consumers into skilled technicians, but it could at least possibly provide a *small* insight into what the problem is for the select few who are actually interested. For example, say someone didn't put their gas cap back on correctly and threw P0456 for small evap leak, if they could see the code displayed on their dash, it could at least shed some light on the issue.

Like a few other people said, I just usually go to Autozone on the rare occasions I've found myself with a CEL. But if my car had standard equipment that told me what the code was it'd be an added convenience.

I'm not going to get into a long debate, this is just something I saw posted on Jalopnik and I agree with so I put it up here also.

Check engine lights are dumby lights, the come on when a problem occurs and in essence is a fail safe. Without it, you'd keep driving and eventually **** would blow.

No, this is ****ing stupid.
Most newer vehicles do have a specific light on the dash for a loose gas cap, and people still ignore it/ don't read the manual to figure out what the light that looks like a gas cap means.
Also, many new vehicles have a KOKO procedure to retrieve codes, that is listed in the manual, but they still don't read it.
Given these two issues, and the fact that 90% of people on the road crank up the radio when their car makes a noise instead of having it looked at, do you really think that a government mandate for more expensive equipment on cars is going to make anything any better.
I decided not to work on cars for a living just for the fact i couldn't stand joe idiot coming in and trying to sound intelligent because autozone told him the problem, now he wants to come in and tell me what they told them, thinking that it will save them a buck.
The government ****s up everything it touches, why do you want more intervention in your day to day life?
Is the computer telling you that there is a P1443 going to help you any? No, because chances are ,you don't have the tools to fix it, nor the diagnostic ability to see if that is the actual problem, or the result of another problem, and if you do have either of these, than chances are you have a friend who has the proper equipment to remove the codes when you find the actual problem.
More dumb legislation from clueless dumbasses who what feel like they know what going on.

Whats the point? If you don't have the tools to read the codes already then you probably couldn't fix it even if they told you exactly whats wrong. Their are people like me that spend hours and hours training and learning how to diagnose and repair check engine lights. I would gladly sign a petition against this petition!
