cant decide: vw or mini truck

I cannot decide on which to buy next, ive had two mini trucks one was a 88 and other a 96, loved both of them and kinda miss the scene and rolling around town and people looking at me like wtf?? Anyways im kinda liking the mk3 jettas but a few of my buddies tell me they are expensive to maintain and have electrical problems and the trannys blow. Ive never owned a vw or any kinda import and im kinda iffy on the subject.

I just recently bought a mk3 golf. I had to rewire the tails already rewire the radio to make it work and the clutch slips horribly. Idk if that helps you at all..Their cool cars, not as expensive as some people think but sometimes if you get the wrong volkswagen..its problem after problem

How about a VW minitruck or in this case, more like a Teutonic El Camino

a. expensive to maintain - not entirely. ASSUMING you bought a five speed: if you get a 2.0...psh dirt cheap. they just work. Vr6 can be pricey if not previously maintained. timing chains and clutches are pricey, but not hard to DIY. also, crackpipe, thermo housing - these suck. however i've owned two with 150k++ miles and they've been just dandy minus the occasional neglected coolant hose or vacuum line.

b. have electrical problems - sometimes. ive had 4, they've been quirk free. just stupid stuff like cracked wires between door jambs which happens on 14-18yr old cars of any kind.

c. and the trannys blow - yes and no, the 2.0 trans is fragile, weak point is the differential rivets and the reverse idler gear. the VR6/TDI trans is much better, main weak point lies again in the differential being riveted rather than bolted - however they will take one hell of a beating.

Also, if you did slammed minitrucks then vw is up your alley a tad.... though i've always wanted a tanked s10/sonoma/dangerranger

Post a picture of the mini! I've done quite a bit of research on them cause I was lookin at them before I got my SHO, I learned that the 2nd and reverse go often and they arent reliable. Also their definitely as cool as the mini truck. In my opinion vdubs are overrated unless they are done right and meticulously cared for and maintained, but im sure theres a couple vdub guys on here that will tell you different
