Scotchy Scotch Scotch...who drinks it?

I have always drank bourbon and whiskey and my brother is very into Scotch. He has bottles that cost hundreds of dollars...I like it a lot, but I dont know much about it. Im reading up on Scotch and im looking for input. Who drinks scotch, and whats your poison? For a beginning Scotch drinker, what do you recommend as a good starter bottle? Any and all tips would be fantastic.

i recently started. i've got a bottle of glenlivet and glenfiddich with my preference towards the glenlivet.

one thing i learned in my reading is that ice is the devil. if you drink a scotch whisky with ice you're a pussy and the scotch will kick your ass.

On the other hand, in order to truely appreciate the flavors, room temp bottled water of up to the same amount of scotch can be added. that is actually the proper way to drink it, or so i've read. it allows your palate to actually taste the different flavors within the scotch.

I think glenlivet is a fantastic first scotch. and always buy single malt. anything else is uncivilized!

Ive been wanting to try different scotches because i've heard that it enhances the flavors and aromas of cigars.

Also, my cousins boyfriend got these for christmas. Its a great idea to chill your scotch/whiskey and not water it down

chilling scotch is a no no. its a room temp beverage. cold does a lot to flavor of alcohol. for instance, a beer should be sampled at room temp as well. not warm, but not cold... 55-60degrees. flavor changes considerably as it warms up from being chilled.

don't chill scotch, that's for fancy ladies ;)

Yea, its not a great idea to chill your scotch actually. Like Scape said, its suppose to be served room temp, with a touch of filtered water added. Im going to go pick a bottle up before this snow storm...maybe two bottles and do a compare/contrast.

have you bought before?

glenlivet and glenfiddich are both great intro scotches. $20 per for the smaller bottles and the difference is very astounding.

Once you establish the flavors, if you want to step up your game pick up one of these from Joe Canals for about $90:

It's a Johnnie Walker sampler with 200ml bottles of their different tiers. Don't just jump right into it though, you wont appreciate the complexities(just like how a $200 bottle of wine would be wasted on me...or $100...or $25 haha)

Scape, this is in fact my first scotch purchase...though I grew up around it. My dad and uncles always drank Lagavulin.. Any opinions on that?

*I also spotted 3 bottles of J-Walker blue in my dads bar-but obviously im not touching those.

I bought my boss a bottle of walker blue last year. But Scotch / Scotts is certainly an acquired taste, and almost goes with certain items. Eating pizza watching football and drinking Scotch is a big no no. However a nice glass of Scotch with a cigar and a book is a good time. However I take it the pussy way, I prefer it on the rocks.

Now the first time I drank it I hated it, it has grown on me..... just no Cutty, I don't mind Chivas.

Genlivet 12 is my go-to scotch. Drink it neat at room temp, like it was mentioned, to really enjoy it how you should.

It was probably said before but try and avoid blends scotchs like johnny red. if your budget allows for single malts you are set. I had the opportunity to sample many high end and rare scotches once. It was a awesome experience, the server knew what she was talking about and even had a sample of the pete used in one of them, she lit it on fire and told us to smell the smoke, then look for that flavor in the scotch.

I was in Washington, DC this weekend with a friend of mine and I tried this drink called the "Ron Burgundy".

'Nuff said, here's the recipe:

A true fan of Scotch can appreciate this cocktail. Glenfiddich 12 year, Sweet Vermouth, Jasmine Liquer, a drop of honey and sweet and sour.

Best 9 dollars I ever spent.
