When you buy a used car at a dealership in NJ do you have to pay taxes?

yes, it becomes the dealerships responsibility to pay them to the state so you better believe their gonna make you pay lol

not all dealers have ridiculous fees, usually just the craigslist/ebay shuffle and dance type ones...

Well I can get around dealer fees and all that BS since I have the money ready to go and I know I can walk out whenever I want, but tax is a different story.

I agree with whats been said. Id walk into the dealer and say "THATS the car I want, THIS is what Im willing to pay, in total, out the door. Can you do it?"

If not, walk. Dont play their games. Call them on every bluff.

You pay taxes for the car in the state you live. We bought the HHR SS in Ohio and we paid PA tax when we got our PA plate.

Buying private or through a dealer you gotta pay taxes.

This is also not true. Dealers get kickbacks from banks for financing so no discount for paying cash. That might of been the way it was back in the day, but not now.

^ this. You gotta pay taxes on a car purchase regardless, whether you give the dealer the tax money or the DMV (when you register it). either way the state you live in will tax you for the purchase.

Most people lie on the titles to avoid tax's and what not,even pawning them off as gifts. no taxes on gifts.

Jplam,when i bought my integra guy wanted 4300 for it,so i told him id pay him 3g's(mind you this was at a dealer) and thats all i paid.

Its so easy when you own you own business to make money under 10g's appear and disappear.

The DMV/IRS is doing alot more to prevent fraud since they need the money now more then ever. Alot of people are getting letters for underpaying tax even when they are buying cars that are fixer uppers and they are getting really good deals. If that business ever gets caught I guarentee you will be paying some taxes and penalities/fines.

It is just not worht it to save a few $ in tax.

ha a dealership had an integra i was interested in listed for 4k, kbb was like 3000 but since it was under 60k miles i figured 3500 would work. they run their numbers and are like "ok we can do 6400 after its all said and done".

walked the **** out of that place.

happened to me as well. bought a car for 5k, said it was in poor condition and only paid 3k. gov asks for the rest of the money, fill out paperwork to shut them up, said paperwork disappears in house fire, tells me i ran out of time and have to pay. it was only like $300 too

Just tell them your going to cover your own taxes... This gives you 20 days to do so I did this with my eclipse. I went up there with what me and the dealership agreed upon got a temp tag good for 20 days brought it home than after 20 days took it to the tag place and paied my taxes on it... Your not going to get out of paying what you paied for the vehical but it gives you a little time to get your finances is order.

you can always find a good deal on craigslist, most of the time the seller doesnt care what you put as the price on the title, how'd u do on the OB test btw

You got a temp tag because you got it out of state. If you by in home state the don't offer that you got to pay taxes right away or you can't register it.

Bottom line, if you can't afford the car don't buy it.

lol i bought my car for 6,000 off someone. went to the dmv in lodi and said i only paid 700 XD only paid 56 bucks in cash compared to 480
