Your steering rod going to your rack may of came loose allowing the wheelbto keep rotating.
This is bad for the wheel because if you have a airbag with a clock spring it will break from excessive rotations. It could also be a bad bump stop inside the rack allowing the gear to go off the side of the rack gear. If this was the case you would not be able to steer back to center again however
