My Job Situation
So I graduated from Drexel this June with a Mechanical Engineering degree. I was pretty worried about the job market but it turned out that I started a job 2 weeks after graduation in Cherry Hill at a placed called UTRS, Inc. The pay is decent, benefits are awesome (they pay 100% of medical/dental ins). Now, its a job consisting of mainly maintainability/reliability of systems, we are a contractor of the government (a lot of work for the NAVY). The job can be pretty boring at times, I'd rather be really busy than have to find things to do all the time, or just kill time. So its not my ideal job right now (but I'm only 2 months in, it could get better). However, before I graduated I applied to Honda Aircraft. Yeah, Honda makes private jet airplanes for all those that didn't know exactly how awesome Honda is. I never heard back from them, so I figured they had no interest. Today I get a call, and its Honda Aircraft and they want an interview. So I agreed to a phone interview tomorrow. The plant is in Greensboro, NC, but my parents live down in NC about 1.5 hrs from Greensboro. I wanted to go to NC after graduation but the job I'm currently at kind of landed on my lap and so I took it. Obviously, I am far from having the job yet, but what would you guys do in this situation? Honda is my dream job. I love being on the front of design and testing. I guess I'll see exactly what I'll be doing, and what they would offer for compensation, but their benefits package looks even better than what I currently have (if you check out THE WEBSITE you will see that they offer Motorcycle/ATV training safety programs, which is sweet haha, 13 paid holidays, etc). I love aircraft, and I love honda, but I do already have a job and I'm settled here. It would be hard to leave all my friends here (I've lived in NJ for all of my 23 years except 2). Just trying to get a feel for what you guys would all do? I have family and friends down in NC too. Thanks guys (and gals).

Do what you love or spend 40+ hours a week doing what you're doing.
Hmmm go to NC when you find out your salary . Don't burn any bridges at your current job in case you want to go back.

I can understand your excitement regarding the chance to interview, and your questioning what to do, however there really isnt anything to think about, until honda actually offers you the job. go ahead with the phone interview, see how interested they are, and wait for an offer to come in before you decide wether or not you want to take the job & make the switch.
theres no sense driving yourself crazy over a decision, unless all the options are actually valid. that being said, good luck! |

Go see what they have to say, if it's exactly what you think you want it to be, give your two weeks and get to trekkin. NJ isn't all that far away.
(edit) Fred took the words right out of my mouth. Good luck with it!

but yeah, nothing is set and they may just be like "hey no, you suck, nvm". But I was so excited when i applied because i love honda and love airplanes... the mixture of the two just blows my mind. appreciate the thoughts though.

Keep in mind that cost of living in NC isnt the same as the cost of living in NJ. So when they offer you substantially less salary than what youre making here now, think about it. Dont just rule it out.

since your still new to your first job might as well try to land a job you really like with a company you are interested in.Moving away from friends can be tough but you have to think about your career and goals you have in life.

see how the interview goes. if your parents live down there already then thats a good way to get on your feet if Honda wants to give you a job. A job is a job in these times so whatever you do, don't burn any bridges lol

You don't sound happy where you are at, unless there is almost a guarantee to move up, take any opportunity you can.
You also sound young. Make all your risky mistakes NOW. You have time to rebound if they are mistakes. But you could benefit from them endlessly, or regret not taking them later on in life. NC is like a 3day weekend journey away. I have inlaws that just moved like 30mins from Wilmington, they were at first worried, but enjoying life now. Like said above. Don't make a move until you are sure you have employment elsewhere, unless you got that FU money.

Everyone is pretty much giving the same advice. See how it goes with the Honda interview then proceed.

Interview went well, I confidently answered all his questions. Hopefully not too confidently. Not sure when I'll hear back from them. I kept not understanding what he said the job entailed, but I know he said its not exactly in the realm of my "ideal job". Which happens to be on the design side of things. But the opportunity to work for Honda outshines that, and my current job isn't in my ideal job description either but I'm content. At this point I'm happy with either outcome, but when they called I figured it to be worth it to at least interview for a chance at a better salary, etc.
I'll let you know when I hear back.
