department of revenue : owe more taxes?!?

I got a letter in the mail saying that "the average sales price for the year, make and model of the vehicle identified is considerably higher than my declared purchace price" And they are saying that i have to pay a estimated 376.50 for my car which a few months ago I paid the taxes for and got the title., and now they want more money.,. what is up with that?? So i guess i have to try to find the seller and have him write a letter saying that I paid what I paid.,?

Welcome to the US? Tax revenue is down, the need to keep the lights on somehow.

I've heard of it happening before. You can say you bought a car from somebody for a dollar (and the seller could back it up), even if you truly paid 10k on it. The only way to really fight it probably is to find a way it was not worth the price they believe it to be worth, and I don't know how ya do that.

They are hurting for money.

My solstice is in my LLCs name and I wanted to sell it to myself for a dollar like mentioned but I rather not deal with the hassle of having some sort of surprise tax.

I called up the DMV and asked and the person said I can gift it to myself and there is not tax. However with a bit more searching I found out there is income tax on gits over 10 grand.

its pretty rediclious.... i mean i paid the taxes and they allowed everything legality.,.. then a couple months later i get something in the mail asking for $400 more in taxes? Its like me buying something at a store when its on sale and when it goes off sale i have to pay them back... or paying msrp for everything??? That's why you shop around to find a good deal (so i thought) until its worth more than i paid for it??? So i'm guessing dealerships are going to payback millions of dollars back to people for overpaying them... no,... sorry for going on and on... just kind of p/o'd that this scenario occurred....

The good thing is Barak will get voted out in 2 more year and maybe we will get a real hardass conservative in there that will slash funding to all the stupid ****.

Not that I was a Bush supporter but at least when he was president I could make some dam money.

Well before you complain about it you never said how much you paid for it and what you actually claimed to buy it for when you transferred the titles. This would be a key part of whether or not you can actually complain about it or not.

I had friends that used to do it all the time. Sell a little honda civic with some engine swap in it for 5k and only say they sold it for 1k or so to help the buyer out on taxes. Yeah it sucks you gotta pay taxes on it but just think of how many people do it.

So you tried to cheat in paying the amount of taxes you're supposed to pay now you're on here complaining that you cheated and got busted? That's the reason you have to pay again because you didn't pay the right amount to begin with. It's only your fault.

I find it funny that you pay tax again on a car that was taxed and paid for when the car was purchased new..

There is a form your supposed to fill out when you buy a car if it is way under book value. It asks you to state why you bought it so cheap. I had to fill one out when I bought the Talon.

I've heard that was for anything less than $1000. He says he bought it for more than that.

I'm not sure how insurance plays out if you totaled the car and only give you how much you paid on a much higher valued car.
