The neutral can absorb an additional 20-40,000 volts including the remaining line feed. Also, if you look closely you can see the arch stranglers being deployed from the pole. ( Former US AF Electrical Engineer)

Damn it, I can't see your video at work, but since I design transmission lines for a living, I deal with lightning all the time I'll check it out at home.

That was awesome.

My boyfriend and I drove home through that line of storms yesterday -- from LBI in NJ out to the Harrisburg area. Almost the whole way through Jersey and into the easternmost part of PA was a mess. We had to drive around three trees that had fallen across the road -- one 'em was on the PA Turnpike, that really effed up traffic. Took us over 4 hours to get home, when it usually takes 3 hours at the most.

Yeah, it was a show for sure...

They were transmission lines actually, and telephone pole was the first thing that came to mind. Im guessing a min of 130kv ... Listen to a 500kv breaker close in, now that scared the crap out of me. Working in the transmission and substations dept. for PECO I get to see cool electrical stuff from time to time..

Pretty crazy. On a side note, I was in the middle of Raystown Lake for the entire duration of the storms.

Thats awsome, thanks. I was thinking about doing the same thing, they may have to edit the language though.

Holy cow, never realized how many electrical workers we have on this forum. We need to make a thread full of the wacky stuff we find out in the field. I've got plenty of crazy pictures from working in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Btw, what substation were you at that had a 500kv breaker in Jersey? The only 500kv substation I've been too so far was at three mile island. Unfortunately I wasnt there during any kind of switching but just being in a 500kv sub was kind of awe inspiring.

Edit:

Just found this video while watching yours, pretty neat. They shoot a rocket into a storm cloud with a copper wire attached. Nifty!

Unfortunately, I'm a transmission design engineer, so I stay in the office 90% of the time. I only get to see what my foremen bring in, LOL or if we have some major failures..
