Audi had the same issue many many many many years ago with the 5000. Where do you think the saying "Im outtie" or "Im outtie 5000" came from? It was referring to the Audi 5000. that It nearly destroyed Audi here in the States. Sure, some of them could have been the floor mat making the acceleration pedal getting stuck -- but more in likely it was scumbags.

My wife and I thought this the entire time. All of a sudden there was runaway acceleration and then it stopped just as quickly as it started? Sounds like people just want to get out of car payments or sue Toyota because they lost their job or something.

EDIT: Here's some insight on the Audi 5000 fiasco: http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/in-...the-audi-5000/

The other thing you have to take into account is the fact that some people use this excuse to get money. Sure a lot of them may be because of toyota error but some might be because of some greedy basterd wanting out of a payment or to get rich quick.

i knew this the whole time. the lady in NY who claimed this after she slammed into the wall they found out that she was slamming the gas pedal and not touching the brakes. the guy in CA who had the prius and the cop got in front of him and slowed him down had 4 floormats IIRC and 2 were the weather tech mats which are about 1.5'' each plus 2 OEM mats. people will do anything to get a lawsuit these days.

it didn't say they were faked...they probably have just been falsely attributed to "unintended acceleration"

when in reality it was probably just idiots.

yep..the beauty of technology. all those people that complained about this who owned a Prius neglected to do some research on the vehicle before they attempted to capitolize on the situation. the vehicle is equiped with a "black box" and will clearly dictate what happened in any situation...any incident envolving a Prius was found that the Brake pedal was never even pressed.

ive done thousands of these recalls since Feb and not once run into a vehicle that had a "problem"...except for the cars that come in with 4 or 5 floor mats stacked on top of each other. than owners wonder why **** like this happens.

This is extremely common. I watched an old guy drive through a brick wall into a restaurant because he hit the gas instead of the brake pedal. So many people do it because they just don't think.

The bankrupt gentleman from california activated his brakes 200+times during the runaway. all of which were at minimal throttle pressure where he knew brake override wouldn't activate.

nearly every day i deal with people in relation to abs, downhill assist and traction control. no one bothers to learn the technology but love to throw that out as being a problem. people just need 4 wheel drum, no power assist brakes, roll up windows and a carb with lap belts... people can't handle anything advanced today.

The author's little story about Parnelli Jones' burnout and comparing it to the sudden acceleration of the 5000 are not the same and wrong. I don't think I need to explain why.

Anyway, this should still tell Toyota something. Maybe their ECUs aren't programmed wrong or the cars don't have sticking throttle bodies, but it should still tell them there is something wrong. Why would only Toyota owners be the only drivers incorrectly using floormats in such big numbers?

well actually toyota's are not the only vehicles that have issues with floor mats, infact i have two friends that work at nissan dealership, and another that worked at a bimmer dealership(laid off), and they all have dealt with the issue of individuals and their floor mats. I believe it was just publicity/media that left us with the impression that it was only a toyota issue. i am confident that other owners have had this issue, its just a matter of lack of media coverage on such.

This. A lot of other companies have had "unintended accel issues", it just so happens that toyota got raped by the media. Possibly to help domestic companies? Who knows.

moral of the story. if you are a dip****, dont drive a car

tho im not sure how people could have issues stacking mats, i work at a dealer and when someone buys a car with oem cloth, then rubber mats, you install the rubber mats and the cloth ones go in the trunk.
how someone ends up with more than 1 floor mat per area is beyond me. guess it all comes down to stupidity.
