Best bang for your buck Radar Detector?

Early alerts would be priority and would spend more if the others only give you a second.
Front and back directional alerts would be nice but not necessary.

If there's one that's good but pricey, suggest it. Thanks.

This will be used on the PA/NJ turnpike. Do they use laser here?
One area says "speed enforced by aircraft". How does that work?

I'd figure it'll just give too much of a sense of security and Bam! ticket you would normally not get.

I use a valentine 1. It's generally the first radar detector everyone buys. Still not cheap but it's cheaper then tickets and hikes in insurance. It's a great little detector though it does give you alot of false warnings. Think I paid $500 2 years ago but it's saved me thousands in tickets.

passport 9500ix would be a step up and probably the one to get unless something even better has come along recently. Has GPS so it knows the false radar and doesn't go off as much.

I have never seen cops in NJ or PA use laser. Doesn't mean they don't I have just never seen it. Laser is a mother ****er. If the detector goes off it's to late you are caught. You can try laser blinders but not sure how well they work. Expensive, quite a bit of work to install. Laser is just a pain in the ass. Even with the blinders there is not guarantee you won't get caught.

Radar detectors are good at night, but nothing will save your ass like speeding smart.

Know where you're speeding, and know where the hiding spots could be.
Watch your rear view and around you ALL THE TIME.

ask my gf.. I look in the rear view every minute or so just so I know my suroundings...

Also a radar detector can bite you in the ass... I've seen a lot of people slam the brakes when they get poped with the gun. This just tells the cop you have one, and you're guilty...

If you want a decient radar detector for the money then stay away from cobra and all other cheap over the counters... get a midrange whistler online for around 100 bucks... they work well without all of the false alarms...

I have a cheap cobra in my car right now and I cant wait to get a new passport or something like a v1.

Escort Passport 9500!! I had the 8500 x50 and LOVED it... as for the Laser question, three times (all undercover state troopers on GSP) I picked up laser... in 3 years... sooo you could get one that doesn't have laser, but chances are if it doesn't support Laser, it's cheap and won't work right anyway..

Valentine 1 is the step up from the Escort series (in my eyes anyway)... but more $$ too.. so I'd say if you don't want to spend the $400+ for a V1 go with an Escort!

I agree. I don't even think about doing anything until I do that plus check out the driver of every undercover type vehicle. That still doesn't protect you from getting seen on the opposite highway if there's a grass median to cross.

Everyone likes to give advice opposite of what a person is asking. Where is that video about car forums.

If you don't think people should speed then start a post about it. It you think you are clever then a radar detector then start a post and show us.

If you can drive a 500hp corvette and not find yourself above the speed limit then you are a better man then me. If you can smell out a cop a mile down a road again you are better then me. Start a post about this stuff and let us know.

Cops are less likely to cut you a break if they see you have a radar detector. It's presence in your car basically screams " I like to speed a lot"

Try reading the tests on this page:
http://www.guysoflidar.com/

They do comparison tests every year or two and they provide quite a bit of detail.

Personally, I've been using a V1 since 1998. It saved my ass countless times. I sent it in to be upgraded to the latest version for $185 a year or two ago. Its much cheaper to upgrade it every so often than it is to buy a new top of the line detector.

i love all the "dont speed remarks". like you Fu*kers drive 55 everytime your on the highway. let me guess...you all have a spacers under your gas pedal to prevent you from going over 55 right?? give me a break...if you cant answer the guys Question than why bother posting.

anyhoo....the V1 IMO is the best bang for the buck. even with some false readings here and there it slows you down just in case.

This Is The Radar Detector I Have Been Using Since Christmas This Past Year. I Absolutely Love It Because It Is Cordless. It Makes It Nice For If You Ever Do Get Pulled Over, You Just Unstick It And Throw It Under Your Seat. No Wires To Get In The Way Or Give You Away!
Now, Yes, It Does Go Through Batteries Pretty Quickly, But I Discovered Using High End Rechargeable Photo Batteries (Expensive, But Worth It To Save You A Speeding Ticket) Work Great! Hope This Helps!

Thats a good choice.

Here is some helpful info I posted on the porsche site not to long ago.

Quote:
I don't speed but if I did here are a series of tricks to help save your ass.

Get a radar detector. Valentine One or Passport 9500ix. You can also get a laser blinder but if your doing 120mph your gonna get hit with the laser not matter what.

Don't run a front plate or get your car inspected. If the cops gonna give you a ticket for speeding and your trying to get out of it he is gonna want to give you a ticket for something else. Most don't want to give tickets but need to show they are doing their job.

Be apologetic and like a buddy to the cops. Look presentable when you drive. No gangster clothes or typical teenager type stuff. Polo shirt, clean cut look and showing respect to the cops goes a long way.

If this all fails and you have to go to court find a lawyer in the area that has a good relationship with the judges/police etc. Almost always gets it dropped to just a no point fine.

If at this point you are gonna have to go into court yourself, look presentable. Suit and tie. You need to show that you respect the court and it's laws. Be polite and respectable to the judge. NY and NJ courts are the most corrupt I have ever seen and if you go in understanding that it's run by people that want their egos stroked non-stop you will be alright. Just stroke away.

haha...wait..are you serious??

im sorry, but if your going 100+ and a cop stops you and you dont have your car inspected, you'll be pickin up your car at the impound lot cause there is no way he'll let ya slide on the 100mph speeding ticket and no inspection.

i hope you were kidding cause thats about the dumbest piece of advice i think i ever heard.
