Looking to backpack through Europe...advice, stories, all that...

I'm in Israel now volunteering and plan on backpacking through Europe, maybe 7 cities in a month. Its cheap to get there from here but the cheapest flight I found home is from Heathrowe for 3-400 pounds but I may not even want to go to London. Anyone know if another location to depart from is cheaper. I also plan on couch surfing and spending minimal amounts of cash on hostels. I am concerned with getting around, what I need, what I don't need with me. Eurorail passes are a lot of money, an input on cheap sources, strategies for this will help also. Plan on flying into Rome, then hitting (not in right order), Prague, Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris, Budapest...taking other suggestions. Im concerned with getting to Heathrowe, that could also be costly. Taking any and all comments, please help me make this happen in the smoothest and most cost effective way. Thanks all in advance!

My advice, be wary of the people in the hostels. They may try to lure you into some crazy pay-to-murder place. Especially if you are a hot American chick.

Careful backpacking through the moors at night. I hear there are werewolves.

And your itinerary sounds like a Hitman level.

I'm serious about Greece. They have a different idea of clean there.

Get some well built, light-weight, slipper like feeling shoes/boots for the journey... Nothing more important then your feet in a foreign land.

i would just go to berlin and stay there, i LOVE it there, see what flights from berlins airport would run you. i hated heatrow, biggest most obnoxious airport ever. i got lost there when i was 11.
