Definitely not aiming for the head. Just worked out that way. He isn't a bad shot, but I do not think he could pull off a head shot on a trotting doe. He was in a tree stand, the doe was in the field, caught wind that something wasn't right and started to trot away. I told him to go for a spine shot in that situation. I think with the excitement, adrenalin, etc going, he got the the rifle up, saw brown in the scope and shot. Worked out to be a head shot Best thing about it was all of the meat is still good well that and that fact that the wagon had brain matter and blood frozen to the roof after the drive back to the cabin.

All in all, its a good time. We were freezing out asses off that day, and it ended in a clean shot. He should net about 50-60 lbs of meat out of the deal. Not too shabby!

Tell him Congrats on the 1st deer its always the hardest. I usually hunt bow but when I dont its all about the .30-06.

Do I dare suggest a TST Hunting Club?

i use a 30-06 carbine pump, but if i ever bought a new hunting rifle it would be a 300 win mag for sure. nothing sucks more than chasing a wounded animal.
