If you're mainly interested in FPS, then you're looking at the wrong products. PC is the obvious choice. But if you don't have time for that, I would go with the PS3. With BluRay becoming the norm nowadays, it never hurts to have up-to-date technology. Additionally, you can pick up a PS3 and install a 1 TB (1000 gig) HDD into it (a painless process that only takes 10 minutes). Since you're not much of a gamer, it wouldn't make any sense for you to be paying $50 for Xbox Live Gold, when you can play ever PS3 game online for free. PS3 also comes with a rechargable, wireless controller out of the box. Wireless is also standard.

The guys at the store said that 360 is best for first person shooter games (which I would want to play) and the PS3 was best for sports games (which I probably wouldn't play). After seeing the Forza thread I had decided on the 360 but I don't want to make a decision based on one game. So I'm sure I'm going to get different opinions on this but I'd love to hear them.
Here, it seems like a decision was already made, but I can toss in some other input.

For strictly gaming, either one is really going to be a solid performer. Most FPS games will be better on the Xbox 360, for the simple reason of Xbox Live. That service literally can add MONTHS to a game, if for nothing else then gaming online. I have been on PSN, as well as XBL, with similar games, and just the quality of being online via XBL was YEARS better. Yes, its $50 a year. Most of us can spend that money in a bar, or a tank of gas, in a day.

For multimedia functions, again, both are solid. My 360 in my living room not only reads all of my dvds (and the few HD-DVDs I got, DOH!), but also can stream media from my server sitting in my apt. The PS3 has a clear advantage here, being Blu-ray.

Honestly, the PS3 in my apt. is RARELY used anymore. Games like Call of Duty, we buy/play almost exclusively on the 360, for the sole reason of online gaming. Honestly, I think the ONLY time I will even consider using the PS3, is either for a good movie, or for GT5 when it finally comes out.

PC Gaming is not what it used to be. And, $50 a year for XBL Gold really isn't that bad. It breaks down to $8 a month. For that, you can barely even get a decent lunch anymore (or a beer at a sporting event).

Ahhh, the age old debate, which system is better. It all depends on your needs. I would say if you are not a huge gamer, and have an HDTV, go PS3. You CAN NOT beat Blu Ray. And honestly. The FPS's on the PS3 and the 360 are the damn same. Halo is horrible so I don't even want to hear that. Forza 3. . I am really not impressed. It is a big DLC for Forza 2. But someone actually said it best. Get the system that your friends have. I have both systems. When I get my games from Gamefly, the only games I get for the 360 are exclusives or games the majority of my friends will be playing. Everything else I get for the PS3. If your friends are split, get the PS3, if your friends do not have any systems, get the PS3. Especially if you are not a big gamer. If you are going to play games Sporadically, get the PS3. You have the benefit of the Blu Ray Player, built in wireless, easy accessories, you can still stream Netflix, you get access to 99% of the games on all of the other systems, and MAG in January.

PS3 is hands down better technology. But they aren't tapping its potential. Who cares if you can put big ass hard drives in it. What are you going to use it for. Its a game system. You have a computer for everything else.

XBox is much better for online. I rarely play without being online to be honest. I also like the feel of the controller much better. The PS3 one feels cheap and too light. XBox makes you feel like your actually holding something.

I agree with you. PC gaming has suffered somewhat, but FPS on PC is still a lot better than a console.

I know that 50 a year is not really a big deal, but if he honestly plays his Xbox once every 2 weeks, there is no point in investing that money. He may as well invest it trying to afford a decent lunch. lol.

Play with a Dual Shock 3. It's pretty much the same weight and feel of a 360 controller. The light weight SixAxis controller is long gone.

Don't forget Uncharted 2, which is God's gift to video games.

Everyone her is going to recommend whatever system they decided to buy so keep that in mind... However Id say that the sales guys advice was dead on. If you want more shooter games, then go with the 360. The 360 also has better multiplayer (even if you have to pay for it) and is pretty much the most popular system of the two.

Don't decided based on the "memory" spec on the box because thats just the harddrive, its only used for storing downloaded game demos and content and whatever the 360 or ps3 offers these days, It will be more than enough for your needs.

If he plays once every 2 weeks, at $4 a pop it is still the cheapest entertainment you can find out there. $4 is 10 minutes of entertainment with a beer which will lead into $4 for 3 more beers. Thats maybe 2 hours of fun at best.

This I agree with. How many demos do you really think you need on a drive? They are usually 1 or 2 levels at best. Play a fw times, if you like buy the game, if not delete. Problem solved. Downloadedable levels, great! You have to have an ungoldly amount of games to fill even the smallest of drives so this shouldn't even be part of the decision as said above. All are ample, especially for the occassionial gamer.

Yep, best buy around for a 360. I picked one up, as it is what most of my friends have.

I'd also say go with what your friends have. Forza 3 is a great online game. And the debate will go back and forth forever. They've been saying GT will top Forza since the beginning... IMO hasn't happened yet, but I've seen some sick graphics (on games in general) on the PS3.

Only reason I am considering buying a PS3. Of course this is assuming the game lives up to the hype around it. Which I hope it does..

Otherwise I have a 360 which I chose because I know wayyyy more people with 360's that i can play with online. The graphics seemed, for the most part, to be similar to me. And there were more games that Xbox had that werent released for PS3. And I know it's been said already but xbox live is vastly better then psn.

However, take into account I had no interest in blu ray and only have limited ps3 and psn experience from playing on a few of my friends that have both ps3 and 360
