VR4 Spyder?

Saw you cruising in the northeast around Knights and Woodhaven; Car was in amazing shape and sounded rediculous. Took off to pick a fight with a Vett that kept cutting you out right around Street Rd.

Anybody?

I have had many VR-4's but mainly the rare ones like the 98's and a few older ones. I can say that the 98 Vr4 will outperform the spyder anyday of the week. The spyder felt heavy and slow. I think alot of it was I left it completely stock and original because it was a collector car, the 98 VR4 I did the bpu upgrades and it ran high 12's consistently. I would be suprised if the spyders would even run high 13's stock. When you factor in the extra weight it is silly to mod them since that getrag tranny breaks on the lighter VR4's when they are stock. I would never buy another spyder again, it is a huge expense when the top stops working on those cars. From what I was told by mitsu, there are only a few trained mechanics on the east coast that can work on that top because it had so many parts controlling it. It did look cool with the top down though. With the top up and windows up, there was tons of wind noise from the top not sealing up very well. IMO I would stay away from those cars.

well you confirmed every suspicion about the spyders. i bone stock vr4 is slow enough, i cant imagine how bad it must be with an extra 500 lbs on its back.

why did you get rid of your 98? also what older ones did you have?

Exactly that is correct.

I had a 3 98's that are the rarest of all the VR4's, 1 93tt, 1 92tt, 1 95tt, 1 95tt spyder. I bought them all fairly cheap and flipped them. They are decent cars but the transmissions are junk and always end up blowing synchros. I bought a bunch of mkiv tt supras instead, they are much faster, built much better, and are more reliable. They also hold alot more value.

They're dogs. My spyder SL, is ungodly slow. It has no balls, what so ever.

But it's honestly a great car just to cruise around in.

The 6spd transmissions in the spyder VR-4's are actually very stout. it's the 5spd's that have issues. And it's not so much transmissions, as much as transfercases.

I've never had an issue with synchro's in my car, unless I bought the car already broken. The synchro's just have a tendency to die out quickly when they're in the hands of bad drivers. I had a 94 TT recently, 163k on the original engine and trans, from the original owner. Compression was perfect in the engine, and the transmission felt brand new. With lack of abuse, these cars last a VERY long time.

Spyder's are definitely not a car worth modifying much. I'm considering turbo'ing my Spyder SL, only to give it a little more get-up-and-go... so it can move out of it's own way if I need it to But most certaily not a car worth trying to make "fast".

There was about 800 Spyder VR-4's made between 95 and 96, and about 700 and change spyder SL's between 95 and 96. They're EXTREMELY rare, and I only know of a handful in the PA/NJ area.

My newest addition, my 95 Spyder SL. fyi, ALL Spyder SL's were automatic. I can't complain though, I bought it to enjoy driving it, not to race around in... I have my stealth for that I picked it up for an INSANE price too. They're going pretty cheap now-a-day's.

How much did you pick up that Sl for? Feel free to PM me on that if you are planning on flipping it soon. I was just wondering how cheap they are now. I paid 14k for my VR4 spyder a few years ago with 70k on it.

I don't plan on selling this one anytime soon, unless someone comes with a killer offer out of the blue

I paid 6k for it on e-bay, from a dealership out in Oklahoma. It needed some minor superficial work (hood, bumper, headlight), and came with a full body kit (for sale!! lol). It had 98k on it when I bought it, it's just about at 100k now. The interior is in pretty good shape, still has the SPYDER floor mats in real nice condition. And the oil pressure is phenomenal, trans is good, etc.

I honestly couldn't be happier with it.

14k for a vr4 spyder with that mileage is an INSANE deal!!

I have the paperwork from the last owner when they bought it. The dealership must have not known what they sold, because with 80k on it, like, 5 years ago or something, the previous owner bought it for like 8 or 9k.

You can find some moderate mileage vr4 spyder's now for about 20k, and some sub-20k ones if you look hard enough. SL spyder's are around 15k now, give or take.
