They have a very solid core of Vets. Smith, Hatch, Prospal, Briere, Carter, Richards, Kapenen, Knuble and Dowd have all either won the cup or been involved in some good series. It really all hinges on Biron. If he keeps his current form they have a good shot of at least coming out of the east.

Granted, but come on, 10 games is 10 games, maybe firing would be dramatic but I duno...scare him with a gun or something. They are playing well now though, just their skating seems to be a bit sketchy, kinda seem like they are off balance a bit, I certainly did enjoy rooting against my dad yesterday it was fun seeing his precious Ovechkin get shut out 6-3

A year or two ago there would have been no chance of trading Gags as he was the "face of the organization" but now Richards and Carter are filling that role.

If it were me calling the shots, I'd get rid of Hatcher (has one year left and I do like him but his time in the league is over), Gagne (can net you a great return), Kapanen (past his prime, let him retire with dignity) and Umberger (really doesn't fit anywhere on the team and can net a good return). Pick up 2 quality d-men with those trades and use the left over money on Prospal, Carter and some of the other UFA's. They also need to lock up Coburn long term. You should still have a nice chunk of change left to pick up a solid addition or two in free agency.
i disagree here. hatcher i dont think is time is over in the league. the guy played every game last year and played a lot of this year. overall he is a good defensemen that brings that veteran style of play.

i wouldnt give up on gagne right now. see how next year pans out with his head, then decide.

kapanen is not past his prime. he is one of the best penalty killers in the league and him not playing in the first game showed that. if he didnt sit, i think the first game would have been a lot different.

umberger is decent but could prob be let go. they def need to lock up coburn tho.

With the salary cap, the Flyer's cannot simply afford to keep everyone.

Umberger is a good player, but his career potential is really a 2nd or 3rd line guy. When you have Hartnell, Upshall and Lupul, having Umberger becomes extra. We can't get rid of Hartnell because of his contract, Upshall plays with a fire that Umberger doesn't have and Lupul has more potential. Where do you play Umberger? If you've noticed in this series he isn't assigned to any line, he is playing as a fill in. For the money it would cost us to keep Umberger, we are better off trading him for a decent return and saving the money.

Kapanen is wearing down big time and it shows. He actually wanted to retire last year and the year before, but the Flyer's asked him to stay to help the younger crew for another year. Thoresen is the same player right now, just a lot younger. I like Kapanen and he is a good penalty killer, but he's not worth the money. I'm not saying the Flyer's should cut him or trade him, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Kappy retire after this year. It wouldn't be bad if the Flyer's gave him a little extra incentive and offered him a job in the organization.

Hatcher costs the Flyers 3.5 mil a year. He is a warrior, but his knees are shot and the guy plays on cortizone injections. If we are going to resign Smith, then Hatcher is not needed. If we don't resign Smith then Hatcher can make some sense to keep, but he needs to restructure his deal and be less of a cap hit.

As for Gagne, the current reports say that he isn't anywhere near 100% yet. His injury is something he may never recover from. If he gets better, I would feel better trading him and gaining back a good young puck moving d-man. If he doesn't recover he will be on the LTIR again and we will need to plug his hole in the line up. Gagne seriously has the makings of another Lindros here. I personally think it's time to let him walk when his replacement (Prospal) is already here and has stated he would like to stay.

I guess the summation of my argument would be that these guys are no longer 100% needed or effective. With the salary cap you need to balance things to keep from getting your hands tied. If we dumped Hatcher, Gagne, Umberger and Kapanen, but gained two solid d-men and some role players, would we be better or worse? Hatcher can be replaced for less money. Gagne has been replaced by Prospal, Umberger can be replaced and Kapanen has been replaced. The core talent of our team doesn't rely on those players, but the defense needs help. If getting rid of them nets help on defense, I'm all for it.

I totally agree, but I think Umberger will be here. Hatcher.. I could live without, even though I like him.

I'd hate to see Gagne go only because he's been around so long and has been such an awesome force on the team. I still remember be awed by him when we first picked him up.

And you know he's gonna turn into a Recchi/LeClair... traded off, traded back, traded off, traded back...

Personally, I'd like to see the man retire as a Flyer and step down from hockey with all his sense and dignity than to keep playing on like Lindros did.

i like umberger but i think he is a good 3rd or 4th line player. if he stayed then awesome but if not then its ok in my eyes.

The goalies really carried that game. And the Flyers screwed up so many chances in the 1st OT it was crazy, but they had to have been exhausted by then.

I give props to both teams for making it through all of the periods and still putting in their all. 1st OT was quicker and more exciting than the 3rd period.

I thought I was going to have a heart attack... now I can relax...
