Got my XTi, 2 shots

Went downtown today to take a few shots, unfortunately I had white balance off on a few of them and they came out red/yellow, and on a few i had the ISO at 1600 and they came out grainy but here are my 2 faves, not edited. Using the 18-55 kit lens full manual mode.
1. Pretty happy with this shot.

2. This is one of a few that had the ISO at 1600..live and learn

Any advice for improvement??

under exposed, nothing is really in focus. i would have used a smaller aperture and a larger shutter speed.

Any other feedback or suggestions...mainly concentrating on the first pic, and mainly concerned with composition

Let me start by saying that the first pic isn't a BAD shot, it just could be improved. That being said, I think you are a little too zoomed in on the bridge. if i were to do that photo again, i would have backed up, zoomed out, and shot from a bit higher, so that there was some negative space on top of the highest point of the bridge, and also so that not as much of the underside of it is seen. i also would have turned the camera left just a little bit so that the peir wasnt in the shot.

for numer two, turn down the iso, and it is a uneven compositionally. there is a lot of negative space in the top left that isnt being balanced out. good effort, but sub-par.

Nice shots for your first time. The XTi is a great beginner SLR. You're going to love it. Like somebody said earlier, for the first two shots I would've zoomed out more. There is no real foreground in them. Also the horizon in #1 is a little crooked. Try to avoid 1600 ISO on the XTi if you can, even at 800 ISO you're going to see a good amount of grain. For night shots and longer exposures, the XTi has 'long exposure noise reduction' that you can turn on in your custom functions menu. I'm not sure if it makes a big difference because I just always had it turned on but it can't hurt. Also if you're shooting on a tripod, try using mirror lock-up to reduce camera vibration during exposure. A remote switch would be a good investment too.

Yea I gotta get my basics down first, then ill spend money on accesories, and I gotta find out what all that stuff is first lol.

Here is the other version of the bridge, once again, unedited.

Its more zoomed out, but still catches the pier, and I think its a bit crooked
For a side-by-side comparison here is the other one again

1st shot, stop the aperture down to about f/11. the shot is at f/5.6, which is a bit large for a landscape shot.

2nd shot, your exposure is locked on the middle portion of the image, which is brighter than the rest of scene, which is why the shot is underexposed. You have pattern metering, which measures 9% of the image (most have this set for the middle AF point). To visualize, look below. The camera is metering the center section in red (brighter than the vehicle). What you should've done is meter in the green circle area, then reframe your shot.
