2008 Buckman's Rail Jam @ KOP

I dont know how many of you are into snowboarding, but I figured I would share these.

A teaser action shot:

Early morning. A cutter directs the bulldozer.

Shaping the landing.

Pro rider Eric Leines signs posters for the fans.

Competition begins with the younger kids, or Groms. This guy is 9 years old!

After the groms was the girl's heat.

Then it was the guys' turn to throw down.

As night fell, the competition continued.

Everybody was stepping it up. Front flip off the A-Frame box.

Winners in the Grom category. Eric Leines with first, second, and third place.

Winners in the Girls category. Eric with the winners again. First, second, third.

Winners in the Mens category. Eric Leines, third place, second place, and first place.

Hope you guys like them. Let me know what you think. I had a great time shooting this. I can't wait for next years.

damn wish i knew about this... i used to love shooting snowboarding in Colorado but haven't really done any since.
1st 'guy' is the coolest kid on the block for wearing a helmet but not using the strap... pointless.
guy in oversized leather jacket? weird... probably not helping his aero or his movement, but hey...

It was in the parking lot right next to Buckman's across from Lord & Taylor. It was HUGE turnout.

What t-shirts did you do? The grey ones? I tried to snag one of those, but they are all thrown out to the fans.

Great shots. It's amazing how good some of those little kids are. If you don't mind me asking, what was your flash setup? I see in your sig you have a 580ex, but what (if anything) did you use to diffuse the flash. An omnibounce maybe? I'm looking to get something to diffuse the flash on my 430EX but i'm not sure what to get.

I had my 580EX II set up on a light stand about 3 feet high and transmitted wirelessly with Pocket Wizard Plus II transceivers. I wasn't diffusing it with anything. I just had pointed straight at the riders at about a 45 degree angle to the camera and about 10 feet from the rail to give front/side fill light. Most of the time I was shooting at 1/4 power on the flash and 1/250th @ f11, ISO 800.

Does that help?
