Unfortunately stars don't just "die"... they normally implode, and create black holes or explode, when they run out of energy. However, I believe before a star dies it expands greatly, the earth would probably be destroyed in that collision... our sun is extremely small...
If the sun just randomly shut off it would be dark within I think 8 minutes. The heat however would last much longer. I don't know how long it takes the radiation from the sun to reach earth, but however long that takes is how long we would have heat and then the end.

And you're right, before a star dies it expands rapidly outward engulfing almost 3x it's original volume... which basically means we will never see the end of the sun, it will destroy the earth before then. Once it gets done growing it rapidly implodes into an extremely small and extremely dense source of matter along with giving out what is known as a super nova. Basically the ultimate nuclear bomb, said nova clears the surrounding area from the small piece of matter that was once the sun, this small piece of matter is an immense source of gravity which becomes the center of your black hole. So basically a dead star = black hole, if the star was big enough it will form a galaxy with it's gravatational pull. If not it will probably just collect a few stars and that's about it.

Ok, enough of me for tonight lol.

Don't forget the North and South poles are going to switch because the Earth will "wobble" or jump off its axis". This IS proven by science that it will happen.

Eh? I didn't read about this at all. That would be quite interesting though. Astronomy is neat I think, however sometimes hard to wrap your head around what's really going on lol.

yeah really... I was freaked out after the star show at the Franklin Institute...

Talking about the edge of the universe, if it ends, and if it does are we next to other universes?

Is there an edge to the universe? Does it ever stop, or does it go on forever? What was there before the universe? Just when did creation come into existence?

its pretty amazing... and scary ;)

im not sure if im readin what your sayin right... but if you mean polarity will switch, i gaurantee nothin will happen. I forget exactly how many times but there are 30+ chrons (periods of polarity revesal) documented throughout the Earth's history. The polarity reverses quite often and the only change is your compass will get confused haha

i think it would be amazing to be alive at the end of man's existence, or during a global catastrophic event. if we all are gonna die one day, might as well be the end of the world

i told friends in the past that when the world ends in 2012 (saw a mayan calendar tv show) i am gonna take out a big loan in 2011 and buy a M5 or a some other extravagant vehicle.

I always liked the 2012 thing more for the history of the Maya. These people predicted, with incredible accuracy, events and movements in the cosmos that we have only begun to figure out since the 1950's. As far as astronomy goes, the Mayans were so far advanced that many scientists feel that they as a civilization held a greater understanding of time and space than any other civilization to ever inhabit the Earth, including us. One of the more amazing things that they predicted accurately was the timing of the winter solstice. Since the Earth wobbles up to 1 degree on its axis, the timing of the solstice varies. They accurately predicted that thousands of years before we even knew that it happened. As far as calenders go, there's is dead on accurate, while the one we use from old Pope Gregory is still "off".

As far as the end of the world mumbo jumbo, there is an elevated risk of things happening. So many points are aligning all at once that the gravitational stresses on the sun and Earth will be the greatest we have ever witnessed. I saw a show and these were the possible things that could happen:

- Since an intense period of sun spot activity coincides with the alignemnt, the sun may throw out massive solar flares. If the Earth crossed one of these our atmosphere would be blasted off and we would die.

- The sun shifts polarity every 11 years, during the sun spot cycle. This switch places strain on the Earth's magnetic field and in the past has caused it to change polarity. The extra forces at play during the alignment could cause the Earth's magnetic poles to flip. Unlike what was speculated at earlier, this would have a massive effect on electronics, similar to an EMP pulse, at least according to the show I saw on Discovery channel.

I personally see it the same way the Maya supposedly did. Not as the "end of the world", but an end of a period of time and a beginning of a new one. The interesting thing is that the Earth for the first time will be looking at the "bottom" instead of the "top" of the Milky Way. This may not mean much, but it shows an interesting idea about changing perceptions.

I like how the mayan's had a better understanding of time and space than we currently do, yet there are people saying stuff about what it means... when we honestly have no clue as to what could happen.

But yes, it is pretty amazing the scope of which they figured things out. For all we know we could have applied an incorrect equation to go from their calendar system to our own... considering ours is "incorrect", or not as accurate as theres

^^ yea i just thought about that while i was watchin the discovery thing

i dont see how anyone can assume something will happen... this cycle happens every 26,000 years, and estimating the Earth is 4.6 billion years (varies for different sources) it means the Sun and Earth has aligned like this more than 175,000 times

and im pretty sure the Earth hasnt been destroyed yet?

And the last mass extinction that we know about was the dinosaurs. End of the Mesozoic era, end of the cretaceous. 65 mya.

65 Million years ago - every 26,000 years?

But the two most popular reasons for the dinosaur extinction are massive volcanic activity and extraterrestrial meteor.

Still confused.
