Have a question? Belts? blown at the track.

Well i have just got home from island dragstrip. While on my last run i noticed that i had no power steering. So i figured **** it, I can still drive home. I get to the pit area pop my hood and notice my other belt is gone too. Now that belt runs my altenator (spelling sorry) and my water pump. Well i couldn't leave it there so i drove it from great meadows nj back to walnutport pa. It didn't over heat. I didn't lose power. The car ran fine and dandy execpt for the power steering up course. My question is how the hell did that work like how did it not over heat. What could have gone wrong. Thanks.

Got lucky? Ya, weird. I guess its cool enough out where she didnt overheat but she was probably running more hot than normal. May have go some fast runs in without added parasitic pulley loss. May wana charge your battery also...haha, i would have expected the battery to die quick, especialy at night. Sure it was an altinator belt?

My neighbor's managed to drive her car for 2 weeks without an alt belt. Hyundai elantra i believe it is. She's had to jump it nonstop, and had no idea why the steering was so difficult. I saw her with the hood popped, went to check why, and it turned out she had ZERO coolant (the hose connected the overflow tank to the rad was missing), and the alt belt, which connects alt/crank/power steering was gone. I gave her a rad hose (makeshift), and filled the coolant, drove her car the 1/4 mile (downhill!) to the nearest mechanic (i would have done the work and gotten parts myself, but she needed the car quick, and I needed to go to work--i was already 30 minutes late).

i forgot to ask if that actually was the belt for the water pump, maybe it's on a seperate belt (i don't know the dsm engine setup well)

ya i'm positive it was an altenator belt. and water pump belt. can't understand it lol. I'm pretty sure the crank pulley spins the alt and water pump. And the belt is gone. ON both of them. On the power steering and the crank. As for the timing belt it wasn't affected at all. separte belt.

Check out where your sensor is. Are you talking about the eclipse in your avatar? Is that a 420a? I'm not sure where the water therm is but if it is not where the water is actually being heated in the engine, it might not be circulating to the therm. Or for that matter, I've hoped that yu've chcked your water level because the engine could be burning up and the therm read fine with no water in it.

just go to the parts store and get all new oem belts, since you're gonna be in there you might as well replace all of them. water pump, alt. ps. should be no more than like 20 or 30 bucks

if your going to do that i highly recommend you place a mark or something where the timing is at before you do it using a paint marker or something this way your timing isn't jacked. make sure its tight as **** too

A guy I work with asked me to look at his car because the power steering stopped working in his cavalier.....it's a 89 or 90 and it's the 4 cyl.. So I go to take a look at it and the first thing I checked was the fluid..which was fine. Then I noticed the belt was a little loose so I touch it....the damn thing falls off. I'm like well theres your problem buddy. The belt was barely on the thing and was like way too big and his only concern was the power steering..he actually drove it around like that....crazy!

Yea I was gunna say, the water pump, idler pulley are all on the timing belt. Only thing run by acc belts is the power steering, AC, and the alt is on a seperate belt.

If your changing your timing belt, you might as well by my cam gears and slap them bitches on to =)

If you don't know what your doing then dont attempt the timing belt by yourself. Does your car have the N/A 2.4? Those motors suck to do t-belts on only because it take about every size socket and wrench you've got. lol. Thanks Chrysler. The acc belts are easy enough to change. Just make sure you don't over tighten them and you'll be good.

The water could have been moving by convection currents.
