how hard is it to get a student loan?

So I got my GED and I found a school that I wanna take online courses at, and all I need to do to start this month, is get finacial aid/student loan. My parents say they can't afford for them to co sign (which is bs). So I'm stuck doing this myself. Its not a big school, and I really wanna get into this now so I don't waiste another 6 months until I can start classes again. How hard would it be for me to go to my bank and ask for a loan, what would they say? Cause I know if I tell the college my parents can't afford it, they'll ask for a bank statement of my parents, and they'll laugph at me. My parents and I really haven't been getting along latley, so there's no hope. So gimme some input guys...

alright, first.. online courses are a joke, unless it's just a couple online courses at a local campus while you attend regulard classes aswell. seriously, you're better off just lying and saying you have a degree than presenting one from an online school, but....

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

that's all you need, go through that and you're set. i'm 99% sure you cannot be turned down

the gov. will find out what your parents make and if its up at a certain number then you're screwed. try it jus to be sure but fafsa can be a bitch sometimes and it can be easier to go through a third party lender.

They only way you can get denied for a student loan is if you have had a previous student loan and never/rarely pay it. If you've never done that, then you're guaranteed to get one.

i guess i should say that financial aid from a school is different than a student loan. fafsa is not for a loan, that is for financial aid provided by the school you're going to attend.

Really, not that hard at all. Nellie May is another good company to look into (and is where my loans are from). Honestly, if your parents are willing to support something important like, and education, I would sit them down and talk to them first.

Also, look into a community college before these online schools. Accredation is a standard for a lot of student loans.

the only way you wont get approved for studen loans is if youve been convicted of a felony or drug charges. Ive had friends that have had their loans taken away for drug charges other than that if you call sally mae or fafsa you shouldnt have a problem getting a student loan at all

Thanks, ill look into that when I get home. I guess I gotta go to my bank and see what they say, it canr hurt lol. I've heard these online classes are of equal credit and on the same level as going to school. I'm gunna go for visual communications, which is all computer based, so they take it as the same thing as going there and sitting on the computer.

fyi, you stand more a chance at getting the loan if your parents do not claim you as a dependent. If they do, then their gross salary could affect your ability to get financial aid. When you had your taxes done last year, did you file as independent?

Your parents income matters until you turn 24, whether or not they claim , or if you live with them. The people that would truly know is the finiacial aid office. And i would have to agree with drew, why online classes?

He's not 24 so my point still stands that if they claim you then you fall under THEIR income.

Getting a federal subsidized loan will depend on how much your parents make. Getting a private educational loan is easy as pie. Just stick with a reputable bank/loan company. Its tough to get the government to think that your parents aren't contributing.

Go to the financial aid office of what ever college you go to. They can help you out.

Also, I have never, ever recommended online courses to any of my first semester students.

The first thing you need to do is file an aplication for financial aid. free at the post office, (PEL GRANT, etc.) Second check the acreditation of the school you are planning to attend. Some Schools aren't worth the papper the write the degree on. Some federal loans are subsidize only if you attend certains schools. Perkins and Stanford loans are good but they have restrictions. read every papper they give you to sign!
And be careful with adjustable rate loans I have one and is a PAIN!
