computer knows DVD-Rom drive is there...but...

when I put in a CD/DVD the computer doesn't see that there is one in there... is my drive bad?

sounds like the eye in there isnt reading anything. a cd-rom cleaner disc might help your problems

doh, this issue started after I used a paperclip in the little hole to force the drive open about a year ago... yeah. I'm a little late asking about this but I'm trying to get ubuntu working properly and completely... still having issues getting dvd's to play when I request them to be...

Before you give up all hope...try a cleaner...OR...

Disconnect it...blow on the connections...basically clean it off/out...stick it back in...hope for the best!!

Yep. It's more then likely the drive. That is the common symptoms when they go bad. CD writers and even DVD writers are really cheap now. Might as well pick one of those up.

the RW drive is fine, its my second CD/DVD reader that isn't... no biggy though. Maybe I'll pick one up at some point

one thing you can try is getting the model of the drive and doing a firmware update, you get the update from the makers website, ive had the same problem before and theres a 50/50 chance it will fix the issue
