Is it wrong to give up a pet?

Im just thinking about it now. My ferrets are boarded at a ferret rescue while im at college. I finally had time to pick them up yesterday and one of them has Adrenal. Basically he is sick and is loosing his hair and im going to have to give him shots everyday. Im not so sure about me being able to give him shots. I would send him back but I wouldnt want to seperate the two ferrets. I really dont know what to do. They said Elmo could get an operation but its $400 which I dont have.

So my question is, is giving up a pet to a rescue wrong? I feel like ill be a bad pet owner if I give them up. Im just worrid about giving him shots and hurting him because they arent the easiest critters to keep still. So IDK what to do im looking to TST for help

If you can't take care of an animal, don't get one in the first place.

If you are stupid enough to get an animal in which you don't understand how to take care of, PLEASE, do us all a favor and give the pet to someone who can properly care for it.

The only wrong part about giving up a pet is that you got one in the first place. You are already a bad pet owner, giving up your pets just relinquishes you from having a pet. It's a good thing.

Huh? Ive had them for over 4 years. Adrenal is an extremly common problem for ferrets. Basically something is wrong with his adrenal gland which it is over producing hormones and is causing him to loose his fur and making him lathargic. Its not me being unable to take care of the animlas that are causing them to be sick. My other ferret had an enlarged spleen and it was heriditary and thats why he passed away.

The problem is that I dont know that much about the disease. I know the symptoms to look for but obviously Diane at the rescue would know more. Because obviously we all arent vets....

I think that you should give them to the rescue if you are no longer to care for them. Besides, they are spending all their time there while you're at school anyway. Im having the same problem with my dog right now. He needs a lot of extra care and training that I cannot provide him with right now. Im seriously considering taking him to a no-kill shelter, where someone will be able to adopt him that can handle him. He is a sweet dog, but was abused at the Pet shop that I got him at. Thus he needs much aggression training.

Yea and like im worried because my other healthy ferret has never lived alone in his life. They are very social animals and hes Lived with Elmo forever. Elmo was the one who had the tumor a lil while ago.

I think the main thing is to think about the animal. Most people that are going to look into adopting an animal from a rescue know what they are getting into, (I am assuming if you turn them over to the rescue, they will be put up for adoption). So, someone looking to adopt a ferret will get him knowing they have to give him the shots...

I think thats one of the hardest decisions. I would do what is best for them.

yeah, well when your ready to have em again get new ones then... i know ferrets are hard to hold still, i've had to hold a racoon while it was euthanized(sp) and for various other shots...

try giving a squirrel a shot......

Hey Susie. Let me know if you do decide to give him up, I can point you in the direction of some rescues for him.

susie..I highly recomend going to some training classes. My old room mate adopted a dog from a shelter and took him to obedience classes, and OMG a world of difference. That dog was the best behaved dog I have ever seen.
he then adopted another dog, a pitbull, and used what he learned in training the other dog. It just takes a lot of time and patience. Dog's are like children and they demand your time...

My problem isn't really controlling him or obedience. Its aggression. Sometime when I tell him to go "to bed" (his cage), he goes in fine, but when I go to shut the door he will snarl and try to bite my fingers. My sister has been home from Cali for the past week with her 8 month old son. If the baby even starts crawling towards his cage he runs over to him as if to bite and/or growl at him. Im just worried that he will hurt someone, himself or one of the other dogs. Other wise he is a great dog. Many people on here have meet him and he is very loving.

Liz the only problem with that lady is that she has to come to the house for aggression training. Thats out of the question because of the other 3. They will all make it impossible to work with him. I am definitely going to get in touch with her though.

oh.. well i would look to a shelter as the absolute last resort. It's definitely a trust/domanence issue. When the dog is bad what do you do? I definitely know there are ways to change that behavior, at least for the most part (there are always exceptions). I just don't know what they are.
