Just for the record, I spent MONTHS in Panama and Honduras, as well as Syria, Lebanon, and a few other places. Not you average Air Force guy, and now they actually have a dedicated and funded unit doing what a few of us used to do under the table and on a budget.
Nah I know for example Corpsman (sp?) Navy Docs, Seals, Sea Bees, And for the AF combat controllers, PJ's etc. know thier stuff.
You just don't know how many times I've been at a party and had to call "BS" on thier stories. I was always afraid one day one of these jokers would think they knew what they were doing and get someone f'n killed.

But seriously good for you man, I'm glad you got the most out of the AF. Most guys I worked with just liked to sit around on the FOB.

FOB?

I love calling BS on some stories I've heard, like the "Marine" who hadn't heard the word "nomenclature" used in describing a weapon. I asked him, after he claimed to be Marine Recon, what the nomenclature of an M-16 was. He didn't know the word.

Please.....

For the record, the nomenclature of an M-16 is that it's a lightweight, magazine fed, gas operated, air cooled, shoulder fired weapon that weighs 7.5 lbs without magazine, 8.79 lbs with a 30 round magazine, has a maximum range of 3,534 meters, maximum effective range in an area target of 800 meters, and maximum effective range at a point target of 550 meters. It has a maximum sustained rate of fire in semi-automatic mode of 45 rounds per minute and 90 rounds per minute in automatic mode.

(All said in one breath). Would you like a post briefing, sir?

Hahaha. This is getting even better.

I have never been in the military so I guess i'm useless.

I also guess that 3 years on a college rifle team means I can't shoot straight either, and yes, we did compete against the army...

Expirience means alot, but I'm not going to group up with a bunch of guys that have always just done what they were told. I would gravitate toward intelligence more then anything.

Just because you know how to shoot doesn't mean you know how to cover your ass.

That attitude will get you killed. There is no "me" or "I" when you're part of a combat team. You have to operate as one, and you have to use some sort of discipline. However it's not all "Doing what you're told." A good NCO can listen to his troops and make a decision. You're given a task, it's up to you to accomplish it. There's more freedom in the military then you think. It's the hypocracy and politics that suck about the Army.
No one said that you were useless or wouldn't be an asset.
But how many teams have you operated with under fire?
Great you can shoot. But can you concentrate while there is return fire? Do you know how to move and bound? Shoot and communicate? Can you effectively reload and perform what you have to under fire when your weapon malfunctions.

I mean if you want to do the rogue movie-guy thing that everyone here is talking about, you have that right. But being in an effective fighting force will accomplish alot more. Most of what I'm talking about is:
"Dude I would totally get some windshield wiper fluid and a super-soaker and kick some butt." LOL.
If I had a guy on my squad with fire'n experience you'd bet your ass I would put you to work teaching noobs trigger squeeze and breathing techniques. You wouldn't be useless at all. Like a said a good leader makes use of what he has.

Wow, this went downhill after all you gillie-guys got serious. If Yahoo's frontpage suddenly said "China Invades! OH NOES!!!!!1!111" the first place I would go is this thread so I can meet up with you guys. But until then, I think I'll stick with pretend-fighting with piss-filled water balloons.

This was a fun thread.

Seriously go rent it.

Okay, this is getting out of hand. Holier then though is what I’m seeing, and it's bringing back shades of "those that can, do, and those that can't, talk about it".

This is a silly thread. When I say I would gravitate toward brains, I was serious. Get a core group of people that can make educated decisions and branch out from there.

As for your comments about all your combat exp. no, I’ve never been under fire, but I’ve been in plenty of them. Can I concentrate when being shot at, don't know yet, but I can when being rushed by 200 people. Can I move and bound, don't know, but I can rapid extract while controlling the neck and hands of a 6' man while my crash team covers my back. Can I shoot and communicate, not sure, but I give orders while in the middle of a riot.

It's not all about combat. There are plenty of "civilians" in my life that I would trust more then a few soldiers. I think it would be great to have someone that knew tactics and the little nuances of soldiering, but ultimately the people I’m going to surround myself with are the ones I already trust.

Oh, and Barry would be on my team too just because I like him and he has guns.

Partner, you're the one who started taking offense on this, as if somehow, we weren't including you. I have no idea where you got that attitude, and your assumption of a "holier than thou" attitude from any of us is just that, an assumption.

Here, we have a group of people with similar interests talking about something they like. You have some similar, but not exact, experiences, and somehow have a chip on your shoulder thinking that not only aren't we including you, but we're also disrespecting you. That's pretty damned lame, mainly because no one has done anything of the sort.

Your comments are the only inflammatory ones here, except when all of us jumped on the wimpy, whiney boy.

Let me refresh your memory and add my feelings....

"I have never been in the military so I guess i'm useless."

No one said that anyone in the military was any better or more useful, just that with certain experience, we could do certain things. I've certainly never been in a REAL fire and although I've dragged folks out of car wrecks, I've never dragged anyone out of a fire. No one is disrespecting you. Are you feeling inferior for some other reason? Lose the attitude, it's silly.

"I also guess that 3 years on a college rifle team means I can't shoot straight either, and yes, we did compete against the army..."

Who the hell said you couldn't shoot? We were talking about a school I went to. Yes, probably the most hardcore in the world, but that's life. You obviously have more time behind a rifle than most people on active duty. What's your point? No one is disrespecting you. Are you feeling inferior for some other reason? Lose the attitude, it's silly.

"Expirience means alot, but I'm not going to group up with a bunch of guys that have always just done what they were told. I would gravitate toward intelligence more then anything."

Are you kidding me? Speaking of intelligence, you mispelled "experience". I got two degrees while on active duty, and was handed several programs, including a correctional custody program and a youth aversion program, to overhaul, set up, handle, and modify as I saw fit. That was as an E-5/E-6, so they weren't relying on me and other like me to follow the leader like a bunch of cattle. Sure, there are some less-than-intelligent people in the military, as there are anywhere, but you've been watching too many movies if you think being in the military means walking around like a robot obeying your programming. You should gain some knowledge before you start bashing a group of fine men and women and indicating that all military people are stupid like cattle. No one is disrespecting you. Are you feeling inferior for some other reason? Lose the attitude, it's silly.

Luckily the majority of Marines aren't like him. For what it's worth, I shoot MUCH better then my two marine friends, with absolutely zero formal training. He's proud of what he has done, and I'm proud of him for serving. But I do agree by stating that "civilians should just stay out of the way" is kind of a stupid ASSUMPTION to make (saying they wouldn't be able to help).

I guess food would be the next problem for a lot of us, which gives the mountains another plus with the abundance of readily available wildlife. Plus I would get to make a bunch of deer/venison jerky!

And add me to the picture flying a jet! That would be sweet.

Why did you only take out the negative of everything I said? Did I not say if I was in a command position I would try and use your skills to the best of my ability?
Or is it that you take offesnse to the fact I wouldn't follow someone without any military/para-military experiance into fire?

Who is holier then thou? Who is saying anything derogatory towards you? Ronnin was right, you have a chip on your shoulder for some reason.

You say that you would gravitate towards brains, but evidently you're not reading what I'm put down. I've spent 6 years now as an intelligence asset for the U.S. government. My experience includes all facets from HUMINT to SIGINT.
So case in fact you're contradicting yourself by not hearing me out because I've done the real deal. On top of the fact of being unlucky enough to be engaded in combat.

Wow that's pretty smart. You're going to exclude people who have first hand experience because you know a guy who watched Rambo at a Holiday Inn Express.
Are there civilians who have essential skills that could be needed in a combat situation? Of course. But if there is a choice between joining up with an NCO with 4 years of military training with a combat tour in Iraq or a guy who shot on a college rifle team....uh, yeah.

Again Tiny no one is saying you or your skills wouldn't be a valuable asset if this country was in a time of need. But there is a time and place to set yourself aside, put whatever formulated "PC" preconceptions you have away and suck it up and drive on. Do what you have to do to protect your buddy's ass and your ass and accomplish what you have set out to do.

And you're right this thread is stupid. But it's always nice to hear what a real world scenario would be like, and what people who have "REAL" experience would do.

It all comes down to putting that little black notch center mass and blowing the guy away trying to piss in your cheerios. Tiny you're saying you would do something about it, and I respect that. Cause God knows there's enough hemp sandled sissy marys who don't have the guts to be a man.
