Alright so I want to seriously get into photography now, and I am looking for a starter camera that I can use now and little further down the road. I'm not looking at spending a fortune on $800+ camera. Just from reading reviews and such I've been scoping out the Canon Digital Rebel XT and the Nikon D40. Any suggestions from those more experienced photographers is appreciated.

If you're willing to buy used, I'd suggest looking at a Canon 20D or Nikon D70s. These are better value for the dollar spent. You'll probably spend about $600-650 for a 20D used. I'm not sure on a D70s; I don't see too many for sale but they probably go for $650-700.

If you really plan on getting serious, you'll quickly outgrow the entry level cameras. They're fine for most but their limitations can be frustrating.

I agree with what i like rice had to say.

But if you are looking into something brand new and basically want a new camera with a warranty then I would suggest looking into the Canon Rebel or the Nikon D40, D40x, or the Nikon D50. Out of the three Nikon's I would probably suggest waiting for the D40x which was recently announced however I don't know if it is already available for purchase or if you would still have to wait a little longer for it.

as ilikerice said, nikon d70s is a good starter camera and i just happen to have one for sale along with two lenses. let me know if you'd like to come see it, shoot with it and possibly purchase.

i have two sigma lenses, 28-70 and a 70-300. for the body, lenses, bag, tripod, card and card reader, filters, cleaning kit, and carrying bags for the lenses i'd like around $800. if you want to talk further you can PM me or shoot me an IM my screen name is listed in my profile

D50 its basically a D40 but you can use all the older film lenses plus its getting cheeper and 6.1 mp on a DSLR is still legit the only thing is once you get really good and want to travel onto bigger and better things the camera is a lil bit limiting. iv had mine for over a year and a haft and love it
