alreight my parents PC is running windows 98 second eddition and i got it some speakers , but they dont work...it doenst let me pick a playback device, etc. its like it doesnt sense the sound card, but the card is built into the motherboard. what is wrong with this

You need to go to the manufacturers website and find drivers.

the problem with that is that this computer was given to us by my dads friend. his daughter is the one that had it custom built, so i have no idea about the components. here is all i can say

Then you need to pop open the case and read the model number off the motherboard (the big one that all the other cards plug into).

yeah you need to find the specific make and model of the motherboard and then download the drivers.

OR just run windows xp and have it all set for you ;)

XP is good, but it doesn't have drivers for everything.

IMHO, grab a cheap windows 2000 cd/coa and upgrade. It'll run fine and may even fix your driver issues. I wouldn't go right to XP right away, 2000 is great for an older computer

if the speakers are digital you have to make sure the output of the sound car is in digital format and not analog

Sorry, but 2000 is just a less complete version of XP. Don't get me wrong, it's miles ahead of 98, but XP is a quarter of mile farther.

he's runing an athlon xp 2100 on that machine!
I have a brother using p3 500 mhz with no real performance issues with xp
