Need some serious help.

I am sitting here thinkin about life, and thouht I would post here for advice.

Ive been into cars since I was a kid, and an interest has grown into a lifestyle where everything circles around anything automotive. Most essays for school were somehow car related, even if they were about psychology. I am going to start my second semester at bucks soon, and I am starting to have second thoughts. Its just not something I can see myself doing for the rest of my life. Sitting in an office, etc. All I want to do is work in a field that is automotive whether is be mechanics, elecrical, paint, custom work, whatever. The problem isnt the choice, but the family.

Everyone in my family has gone to a University back in the Ukraine, and they want me to do the same. Whenever I talk about cars (all the time) it drives them crazy. I told them before that I wanted to be a mechanic, but they flipped **** on me and told me that if I didnt go to college, they didnt want me living in their house. What should I do. How can I convince them to stop being so one sided against my future. They are convinced that all it takes to be a mechanic is being able to use a wrench, and not having any knowledge about cars (not having any schooling on the topic)

I would like to thank everyone for reading this thread, and for any useful input. Any experiences would be apretiated, as this thread will be forwarded to my parents for reading. This is just a move I am making for a bright and exciting future for myself.

Thanks again, and Happy Holidays

go to automotive school. a friend of mine went for that and is now working for audi in their R&D facility. he gets to help design and test audi's we may never see and could probably never afford.

theres so much more you can go to school for, car wise, besides just being a mechanic in a standard sense.

I dont think anyones parents would unapprove of their kid working for BMW or Lexus and not at a dealership garage but in the actual facilities

Have you ever worked in a garage? If not I highly suggest you find a place that will hire you as a helper. I thought it might be something I wanted to do til I did it 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.

LOL. very true. changing oil and brakes all day on crappy everyday cars is far from the fun of putting on performance parts on fun cars

Go into into mechanical or automotive engineering. or industrial engineering, learn the core or mechanics and production and design, then in the later years of college you can refine you're course to be more specific towards automotive design or production. The desire to be a mechanic can definitely leave a bad taste in some parents mouths. It's generally not a position that is sought after. (By no means am I saying it's not a good career or an easy one) But there are many different avenues to go. Look into more computer engineering and math if you are interested in tuning and mapping algorithms.

there are many avenues you can go into, do some research into them. I think if you're parents had a more exact understanding as to what your intentions are and how it does involve applied technical knowledge, they might be more acceptant of it all.

but like the earlier post, changing oil and, spark plugs, air filters, brakes, axles, and tires gets to be kind of a bore when that's all you are doing.

If cars is truly your passion and you're not fat and always pissed off (its only a sterotype) then why don't you try to open you own store...or become ray@turbotek or do something like that.

1) Nobody said it would be easy 2) Learning how to do everything is all part of the fun.....and 99% of the people in here would say changing oil and breaks on a 1992 cutlass classic isn't fun

It may not be as fun as playing video games, but to me, its more interesting than anything else.

i wanted to drop out of college and do something else, but like more than one person forced me to stay, i have to tell you im miserable as hell now, i hate my job and im aggravated all the time. Take it for what its worth, but quality of life should be more important to you that what other people want you to do

Well I had though about going to an automotive school but there are many things that changed my mind...

1. Cars are fun hobby and I enjoy working on MY CAR

2. My ex's Dad owned his own garage, hepulled in some nice bank but he worked long days and it very physical work, alot of mechanics have back problems later in there life too

3. I really don't want to be doing manual labor for the rest of my life..I'm sure when I am 50 or so I'm not gonna want to be wrenching on a car everyday to bring home money...

I just think being a mechanic is cool but its only a hobby, I do some stuff on the sides for people but I couldn't do it everyday, i went to school for audio production and thats what I am doing mon-fri and the weekends are my time to work on cars and I like it that way...

think bigger-
what about going to school for engineering and doing something more deeply involved in cars?
I remember when I was a freshman @ Drexel seeing a engineering co-op at Honda in Ohio to help design a car (which I dreamt was the s2000)
