You have experienced something similar to the slashdot effect (after slashdot.org). Slashdot has been know to link to a website and within hours the servers of the linked website are brought down with the sheer traffic. Luckily you didn't get a volume of hits that your server could not handel.

Where they linking to a particular page? Was the referr from a partiular page/forum/thread? Usually you can check the access.log for your server to determine this.

I don't have access to the server right now I am at home, but looking at my analytics tool they all linked directly to the main page, about 900 unique visitors within a few hours, the average page views were 1.4 and timewise about average of 20 seconds. This slashdot effect, do they try to do it on purpose to try and clog the server for fun? or is it just sheer interest in the link/product??

and yes, I sell 10 Pound Guittard chocolate bars.... aka Monsterbars!

As far as I know the slashdot effect is not used for evil. It's just that they have so many readers, and linking to a relvant website in an article can cause problems with unprepared web servers.

BTW: If you are running Apache take a look at the access.log file. This should show you the url of the thread that had the link to your web site.
