Warning: Counterfeit Sandisk Flash Memory Cards on Ebay...

So it sounds like 90%+ of the Sandisk Flash Memory on Ebay is counterfeit... I was JUST about to buy a lot of it and I found this notice. I asked the vendor I was talking to if he could prove his items were legit, so I'll wait to see. Here is an article which tells you how to spot the very minor differences between genuine and counterfeit examples...

http://reviews.ebay.com/FAKE-SanDisk...00000001456539

For those curious... I was about to get (4) 2 gig Sandisk Ultra II CF Cards for $210 shipped... retail packaging. Instead I will most likely be buying them from newegg.com for about $265 shipped, but I will have the peace of mind that I purchased legitimate, reliable, fast media for my camera.

thanks for the heads up.

at least if you are getting them from newegg, you know the service will be fantastic.

good post, but really who cares? with most computer items like these.. memory cards, flash memory, optical drives, .. really most electronics.. there are only a few manufacturers of each item. different companies slap on a different name and a different outer casing on the circuit board.

im willing to bet that even if theyre fake theyre gonna be just as good. just my .02

a lot of people care actually. if you were duped into buying a car for example that was mis-represented and you think quality was sacrificed, then its a big deal. I know we're not talking about tons of money here, but quality-wise, do you trust white-label? I don't, I've had too many bad experiences. Sandisk is name-brand, and a lot of people buy based on that.

Also, if people sell sandisk rip-offs and they are indeed junk, wouldn't that hurt the company's reputation?

[edit] Newegg is the best IMHO...great company

well in this case it does make a difference because of reliability and compatibility, which does seem to vary widely by brand, and mostly because the read/write speeds of these cards vary widely. some write at 1 mb/s and some write at 40 mb/s. this is huuuge for a working photographer when it comes to transfer times.

the best way i could equate it is if someone took a no name 600mhz processor and rebadged it as 3.4 ghz pentium 4 with hypercentrinothreadingraid technology.

i'm looking to pay for cards that will perform reliably and fast, and thats is what i need to make sure i receive.

gotcha on that point and if they are misrepresenting the speed then yeah its a big deal. otherwise, one would assume the speed on the packaging is correct

Intercooled: i agree with your first post here *IF* they were charging the same price as the genuine products. but being that they are much cheaper it kind of nullifies that point

anyway, +1 for NewEgg,.. amazingly good service
