No, thats not quite right. You have to take the written part to get your permit. You can't just walk in and get it and walk out in a matter of minutes anymore.

You used to be able to go in and pay the fee ( i don't remember what it is) they would give you your permit nad you would now be legal to purchase a bike, register it, and get insurance on it.

Now, you have to go in, pay the fee, and take the written exam. If you pass the written exam you will get your permit and can do the rest. It is still a good idea to take the msf safety course to get your license.

What about NJ? Can you take this test in NJ with a NY permit? and does NJ allow you to register with a permit?

You can buy a bike in NY without a permit or license at all.

I did.

The road test is simple. Just practise up on doing slow turns and figure eights. Use a sport bike or a light bike for your test and not a Goldwing cruiser cus those things are impossible to figure eight in. (My assumption is that you are looking at sport bikes anyway.)

BTW, my bike is for sale, registered in NY for $5500. only 2,350 miles on it.
2005 Yamaha FZ6 600cc sport bike. Pic of it in "My Garage". Includes jacket, helmet and gloves.
