How to cut a door to size?

Well I need to put a new door on my room in my parents house and Ive been told that the door frames are not a standard size so im going to need to buy a bigger door and cut it down to size. Then chisel out the hinges and everything. My question is, the doors are hollow, so how am i suppose to trim down a hollow door? Do i just cut out a section and reattach the top/side? If anyone can help me out with this i would greatly appreciate it.

Call a carpenter. Hanging doors is a pain in the arse.

Buy a door that is 'pre-hung' with the frame work. It's usually a lot easier.

yeah thats gonna be a bitch. some doors are solid, but more are hollow with a frame around them. you'd probably have to reinstall the frame around the edge of the new sized door, and you'll want to be working with the bottom of the door not the top so any 'custom work' isnt as noticeable.
but i think all in all i agree with poolmike...

They are called shims. Measure the door and see what the size is, if it's not a regular size then buy a pre-hung door and use the shims to fill the gaps. I went through this with my bathroom door. Or, just buy a pre-hunt door that is larger (only by a 1/2" or so) and cut into the wall. Your parents will think twice about letting you do another project again by yourself
