Felons are not aloud to own/possess/shoot a gun simple as that. One reason why you need to thouroughly think out what you do before you do it and the possible consequences. Stuff like that WILL come back to you the rest of your life...

I have a Springfield XD 9mm. I really prefer the feel of the springfields over the glocks I have shot. If this is your first pistol, buy something used. Get used to it, and figure out what you don't like about it. Once you have a better idea of what you do and don't like, you can pick up a second pistol. Getting a 9mm means cheaper rounds, which means it will cost you less to shoot a few hundred rounds each month.

If you are considering carrying, definatly take as many safety courses as you can, and make sure you are proficient with the firearm. Also, evaluate why you want to carry the weapon.

I also have an XD 9mm and I love it... better than glocks ive handled. The grip angle is more of a 1911 style than a glock style. I have considered trading it in for a ruger p95---they get great ratings as well and come in around $380 retail---a hell of a gun.

Glocks are more designed for personal concealment/defense rather than target shooting. You have to keep into account what things are being designed for.
So yea, a glock probably would not suite the needs of what he is looking to do here

How do you figure? the XD9 service model is smaller overall than the original Glock 17. It also has a shorter barrel, making it the lesser of the two as far as an ideal target pistol. It has no manual safety, like the glock, so there is no fumbling in a self defense situation. It has an almost identical trigger pull too. Both are designed as combat/service/self-defense pistols. The XD was more accurate and felt better in my hand than the Glock--simple as that.

I was the exact opposite, which is a strong reason that without shooting both of the guns, he will never know I thought the XD9 sub felt like crap, and shot even worse. The g26 on the other hand, was more accurate than the g17 and full size xd9
