First shoot: My friend's Scion FRS

Just recently started getting into car photography, and with my friend having gotten his new Scion FRS, I figured why not shoot it?

Here are the results. His car is still stock but he has plans for mods in the near future when he has the funds, lol.

For you more experienced car photographers: Is there a way to lessen the glare/lens flares I seem to be getting in my photos?

Always remember where the sun is when you shoot. That's the easiest way to remove the glare. Its also removable in pp but that's more of a pain. I assume you're working with average lenses so that's a big issue to try and get past. Spend the beginning part of your time learning how to place cars in the shot. What are you shooting with? Your settings will play a big part in your shot outcome.

Back up. Don't fill the whole frame with the car.
Watch for details on the car that will detract from the picture. Glares, windows up or down, wheels turned to a bad position, etc.

And avoid the angular shots like that first one; standard picture formats are much more interesting to look at/ less for your brain to try to translate.

I'm currently shooting with a Nikon D5000 -- it was a camera that my dad passed down to me and I have been using it off and on and recently started to get more serious about it. I'm planning on upgrading later down the road once I master the settings and learn more about getting proper exposure especially when shooting outdoors, it's a huge pain but I'm learning as I go.

And yeah, placement is a bit tricky for me. I just wanted to capture it from different angles. I tried doing a few full on, body shots from the front but there was always some sort of glare/shadow that distracted from the whole thing

Thats not a bad camera, the issues will never be corrected until you learn the basics of shooting. You can have the best camera on the planet but if you dont understand how to use it as well as subject placement in the frame youll never improve. Like Insulin said, keep your horizon straight, those aggressive angles dont help the shots at all. Never have the inside of your tires facing out. Dont be afraid to move the car inbetween shots, you dont want to waste what could be a good shot because you had the wheels facing the wrong way. Spend some time learing how to adjust your camera/lens settings to get the most out of your shots. Once you learn the basics and how to adjust your settings then upgrade lenses, the better the lenses the better the shot outcome. Be prepared to spend money if youre serious about photography, its not a cheap hobby. If you really want better shots then youll have to buy better the lenses. The lower the Fstop the better the lens usually, youll want something at a length your comfortable with like 35 or 85, or a zoom lens like 17-50mm but youll always want something thats 2.8 or lower. Lenses with 1.8 or 1.4 or 1.2 will give you a great DOF for your shots and help draw attention to the subject.

I hope this helped.

Try to avoid taking pics when the sun is high. Early morning, late evening or overcast days give great lighting. A lens filter can help with glare.

Lots of practice, take pictures of everything.
