I have a different view on photography equipment then some i suppose. I bought various non L glass before since it was cheap and i could afford it. I then bought the 70-200 2.8L (i don't think there is a bad review on this lens anywhere) I immediately could see a difference in quality not only in my shots but the build of the lens. I decided then not to waste my $ on a cheaper lenses, just save up and buy the right one from the start. In the end it will save money. I had a hard time selling off the non L glass at 50% less then what i paid for it. I can sell my 70-200 for maybe $200 less then what i paid for it 5 years ago. I mean to each their own, but i'm of the mind set do it right and do it once.

But at any rate, do what you think is best. i'm not saying all cheaper lenses suck but there is a reason why the L's are priced the way it is.

Jim that's what I don't want to do. I've noticed that a lot.

I'm taking Dante's advice at first and just working with what I got and getting used to my camera first. That I kind of didn't do and wanted to dive in right away without really knowing what I was adjusting.

Grimm I may eventually get to that point, but not until I get better in general with my camera.

At some point I will take you up on your offer though. I've been reading a lot on this for the last couple hours at work and starting to understand a little more.

Yeah but you're biased because you ended up becoming a pro. If you instead ended up becoming a professional racing driver you might be kicking yourself for wasting so much money on camera equipment. The L glass isn't a waste at all if you definitely aspire to be a true pro. I'm not sure Rob is able to make that call just yet.

I appreciate the compliment, but I don't consider myself a Professional, but I do understand what you are saying. Although when the time comes when he is ready to purchase a lens I would still lean towards the L. It's just a better investment. It won't depreciate like other glass, and it will well outlast others. Plus when he is a race car driver he can have his "wife" use it to take professional quality shots of him with it on the track for sponsorships and such ;)

Same 3 lenses I have for under $2k.
70-200 2.8L
17-40 4L
10-22 3.5/4.5 better option for wide angle on a crop body
50 1.8

I tried making a fatty on sunday, made from ground pork and turkey, wrapped in 1.5lbs of smoked bacon stuffed with stroganoff... it was not a success. it was way to big and split open on the smoker. I was also doing a 6.5lbs pork shoulder which was great except my rub was a bit to salty.

I love the way you guys think. One day I will get there. Maybe not so much a pro, but I'm a good enough racer I think that I will make a name for myself.

IT took my computer yesterday. Gave me a loaner but they didn't map my access to the server drives or printer. I'm also down to only 1 screen. Productivity is at a snails pace now. Hopefully I'm back up and running soon.

And I do actually need access to the drive. All the templetes I made for emails and letter are there. Its a PITA to have to type everything from scratch.
