Completed the interior tonight by ordering new a-pillars (alcantara fabric sags over the years), new center console piece (what the arm rest, e-brake, cupholders, etc. go into) to replace the scratched up piece and a new set of factory floor mats.

The interior when I bought the car needed these items for a full refresh and I also reglued the door trim, replaced a bad subwoofer and cured speaker rattle in the passenger door. So interior is done. A fully loaded, nappa black leather interior.

Ordered replacement headlight covers to replace the pitted original ones. Easier to do this than to clear them out with buffing every few months after the UV protection is sanded off with the first buffing.

Small detail to the exterior.

Good news: Bought an updated TCU (Telematics Control Unit) for the car. Bad news: It may not have Bluetooth on it despite having the logo.

BMW was cray cray with these early TCUs...twenty-five different part numbers with nine only having BMW Assist on them (think German OnStar). Of those nine, four were labeled as having Bluetooth but probably didn't (I'll be verifying if mine does or not).

From 2001-2004, BMW pre-wired the cars for Bluetooth integration. Steering wheel buttons and radio buttons are on these cars despite not having the feature. In late 2004, when MY2005 came out, they were the first ones to get Bluetooth. These TCUs were later upgraded 13 times up until 2006, with Voice Recognition being included and improved. There are also different microphone versions with each one getting better noise cancellation.

You can tell that they were riding the wave of technology with these TCUs in an effort to nail down one that fulfilled the feature requirements.

So while my 2004 has the BMW Assist "shark fin" antenna, the Bluetooth controls on my steering wheel and radio, the microphone installed in the headliner, and the Bluetooth antenna mounted in my center console...my TCU is only for BMW Assist.

A bit of a dice roll, but maybe I'll get lucky with this TCU that I bought. If not, I can always resell it.

C'est la vie.

Long story short: Insurance is covering a new front rim and tire after I hit some construction zone metal substructure in the road Saturday night. The wheel couldn't be repaired, and BMW is ordering a new one courtesy of my collision coverage.

Funny part is that that wheel needed to be refinished anyway, so this works out well, haha.

I get the new wheel and tire Wednesday. Until then I'm driving a Jeep Patriot (AMERICA>>>>F YEAH!!)

While my car is parked with a jack under it, I attacked those saggy A pillar covers and replaced the floor mats with some new OEM ones. Unfortunately I forgot to take a pic of the old passenger side a pillar cover while it was installed (because it was hideous).

So I'll put up some here. I also have to replace the center console piece but I couldn't remove the one in there because the two screws holding it down were spinning freely. (To an online FAQ I go).

In the meantime, enjoy some finishing touches to the interior to bring it back to like-new condition.

Fabric separates from the glue drying out over years.

Das airbag

Fixed

Repeat for driver's side.

Fresh floor mats:

Ballin out of control

Here's the center console piece I need to learn how to remove. You can see all the scratches, which is why it's being replaced.

I know the leather seats need some Gliptone...but for a 2004 interior, this looks pretty damn good.

Next up will be the new wheel and tire (duh), the center console piece, the new headlight covers, and the "new" TCU to see if I got BlueTooth or a dud.

Interior is about 99% done now. Sexy.

and yes it is three months dirty in the pic above aside from occasionally vacuuming it.

This has been a great month for progress on the car. I have a valve adjustment, oil change, transmission fluid change, and ps steering hose replacement scheduled for this Saturday.

Picking up the new wheel and tire tomorrow.

Buying a set of Eibach springs to match up to the Konis. Need to sell the adjustable H&Rs. Also buying a painted CSL rear diffuser.

Next steps from there are to install the suspension, get an alignment, install the rear diffuser, replace the center console and headlight covers and then have the front bumper repainted. I'll be replacing the TCU with a Bluetooth unit as well to unlock the full oem potential of the telematics/audio system.

Also having the rock chips on the windshield fixed too.

At that point the interior, suspension and exterior is about finished (still want the CSL trunk lid).

Gotta do the brakes too yet. I'll drive up to PA to check out Ryans new shop and give him an easy brake job to do with as lines.

Love this car....

Payment sent in for the CSL rear diffuser. Here's what it looks like:

I plan on getting that trunk lid too in the next few months.

New wheel and tire are on the car and due to difference in tire height, is throwing a TPMS light on my dash. I'm going to take the car back and have all the other wheels looked at too. Then get a new set of summer tires.

Thats about it right now..my replacing the a pillars has the passenger window trim sagging off so ill have to reglue that. Also need to swap out the center console and headlight covers.

Let me tell you guys, if you ever have trim sagging or coming off on your car buy 3M black adhesive for it. That stuff works like magic. The M3 has an issue with the door trim glue drying out and the piece coming off on the driver and passenger side over time. Hit it liberally with this goop and it will stick again no problem so long as you prep it correctly (aka clean off the old glue and wipe down with water).

Fixed the passenger door trim in like 15 minutes. New A pillar and the door trim is now correctly fit together and looks like new. Also repaired the largest chip in my windshield and will tackle the remaining two tomorrow along with the previously mentioned ad nasuem headlight covers and center console.

I'll take a couple pics tomorrow since there have been a lot of words in the last couple of posts. ;)

Replaced the center console today and drum roll please....

....

.......

The interior has been fully restored and is done!! High fives everyone!

Here's what I did to recap:

-Updated the Nav firmware to the latest version
-Changed Navigation splash screen from displaying BMW to the M logo
-Updated map data to 2011
-Replaced A Pillar covers
-Reglued the sagging door seal on both doors
-Replaced five of eight missing floor mat holding plastic velcro discs
-Replaced floor mats
-Replaced shift knob and boot with a ZCP shift knob and boot
-Installed BMW Performance Short Shifter
-Replaced bad Harman Kardon subwoofer with a working one
-Replaced passenger door clips to eliminate speaker rattle
-Replaced leaking rear view mirror with one from a 2011 M3
-Replaced cup holders

Ta Da!

Exterior is up next:
-Headlight covers
-Foglight covers
-Windshield cowl
-Hood vent
-CSL Rear diffuser
-CSL Trunk
-Repaint front bumper
-Repair/rebalance wheels
-ZCP wheels

Of course, mechanical will come first before the exterior is finished but definitely on the right path here to getting the car back to 100%.

Here's the old center console:

See the scratches?

Better pic of the scratches and damage

Here's the new piece (ignore the dirty cupholders):

I'm not sure if other people would be focused on restoring instead of modifying, but this has been just as fun

3-5 week wait time on the CSL rear diffuser. It's coming in already painted in Carbon Black so that all I will have to do is bolt it on. Can't wait to see how that changes the look of the car. I'm hoping it doesn't look too out of place without the CSL trunk.

Quick advertisement for Ryan and Drake at Area1320. Even though they are Subaru specialists, they have eagerly worked on my old Evo and are a great resource for parts of pretty much any make. (KWs for a BMW? Sure why not).

When you have a shop that has consistently been on top of their game since I first brought my STi into their old shop back in Nazareth, it's hard to not want to see them continue to be successful.

So why the man crush on Area1320? Ryan has convinced me through his special way of cajoling (aka underselling everyone for fun), to get a set of KW V2s and AP headers for the car as soon as my relocation to Charlotte is finalized.

With a 911 coming in the near future, a KW equipped M3 daily driver with 350ish HP is pretty damn sweet.

Thanks Ryan. You homo.

Repaired out of balance drivers rear wheel.

Ordered a Bluetooth tcu from a 2006 m3 so I'm guaranteed to have the right tcu now to complete the system.

Listed the other tcu on eBay along with the Koni suspension and a remanufactured rear passenger brake caliper since I've decided to just replace all four calipers with new ones.

Washed car and plan on removing the oxidation from the m3 badges on the side grilles.

Boom.

Anytime! I can't wait to see the new shop! And throw you the keys to the car for fun.

Pro tip: if anyone has light oxidation on their turn signals, headlights or badges...use a magic eraser! I just cleared up my M3 badges on my side grilles with one. Easy...just add water and scrub. They now look brand new

Typical issue with lowering springs and oem shock upgrades.

KW V2's are rated better for ride quality and handling for a street car which this is. No wild dreams of it seeing the track really, so it makes sense to spend the coin.

Power-wise, ive noticed a difference with the good catalytic converters on the car. Feels more sluggish off the line through the midrange. Could be the summer heat and humidity, but it underwhelms me at times where it never used to before the replacements went in.

Not surprising to hear about the issues with matching spring rates to damping... A lot of people on the Evo forum didn't get that concept lol.
