Well then he better start saving, the smg pump isn't a question of if it will fail, but when. Also if your battery ever dies your smg pump can't prime and it will break. There are plenty of problems with relays etc. your brother is a lucky man!

with what you are looking for, the bmw is the best bet if you buy it at the end of the month or talk them into the extended warranties.

Its a gm performance car that was based off of their holden line in Australia. One of the best cars GM made, especially for a RWD sedan. Similar to the CTS-V in concept but much more affordable to the average joe.

I enjoyed my 2008 135i. Specs are closer to the e46 but the maintenece is cheaper, but still BMW expensive if you have it done at the dealer (first 50k is free though.) If you are worried about the HPFP, the warranty was extended to 120k miles. My car had 70k miles on it when i sold it and i never experienced an issue with the updated software. The previous owner said he had it go once and no issues after that. That said I only attained 22-23mpg in my 1er mostly highway, it would tough to get high 20's mpg and still push the car.

Kobb's software is pretty good.. I'd chose that over any of the non-flash tunes.

335i, hands down. Yea, the e46 m3 looks a little better, but I prefer a 2 door 335i if it was up to me.

Get a 4 door like my buddy/a member on here did and surprise people LOL. Tune, intake, BOVs, and he's making 405hp and 415tq on a DynaPack Evolution 3000. He DDs it, and it's been running that tune since October with no real issues unless he puts too much e85 in the mix and throws a lean code like a tard.

The reason I like it more is because it is an all around better daily, better MPG, cheaper insurance and a quite ride

Looks wise, I give the m3 a slightly higher score. Interior, I like the 335i more.

Paint wise, I LOVE the clear that's on a 335i unless it comes to doing repair work. That **** is the hardest clear, and I say it's harder then what Mercedes uses on their cars with 'ceramic' clear.

Wish I knew what clear BMW used, cause I'd start using it. It's only on the 335i as far as I've 'found.'

Agreed, and I don't see why everyone is focusing on hp when he said he doesn't need a car to race to work everyday. If you get smg there is a full auto mode so your wife can drive.

I dont know why everyone thinks that. First off the interior was a huge down grade. The materials are cheaper is wear sooooo badly compared to the m3, and the seats are much better in the m3. I cant think of any reason why the 335i would be a better DD and the gas mileage is amazing. On the highway from 65-75mph I get 27-30mpg and 80-110 i get 26. No 335i will beat that. Not to mention e46's are extremely quiet cars. A buddy of mine has a 500hp supercharged m3 with straight pipes and isn't that noticeably loud form the inside, and Believe me its loud. It probably the loudest car I have ever heard, but is pretty quiet on the inside.

The cars are different, it really depends what you are looking for. It also depends on what packages you get. I would not touch a non-sport package 335i, up in the NE cold weather is a must too. Without those, I would get an M3.

Anyway:

- 335i has a less costly/ stringent maintenance routine, and as I said before may still be in the free maintenance to 50k window.

- Age - To buy an e46, it's going to be at least 6 years old. Ideally you want a 2005-2006 ZCP with low miles which will be high $20k to low $30k. You can get a CPO 335i for that.

- The M3 is more raw and edgy, but for a DD you may not want that. The 335i is a sport touring car, IMO it is better all around than the M3 when considering moving people and families/kids. Not that the M3 can't move people, but that the 335i is more comfortable, comfort that comes with only a slight hinderance to performance. IMO if you want an in between, the 135i fit the bill. The 335i is a bigger car, the e82's are the new e46's in terms of size.

- I would be more leery of buying an m3, they've gotten down to prices where they fall into the hands of ignorant fools. I would never get one without full records and a competent PPI. If you want a mint/unmolested example, you are going to pay a premium which will depreciate quickly as soon as you start to drive it.

- looks are subjective, I like both cars in this regard for different reasons.

People get stuck on the "M" badge, getting past that, the 335i may be a better choice based on needs.

Yeah part of that is definitely true. I drove 6 1/2 hours to buy mine, as its one of the rarest not individual color combinations. Its a 2005 e46 M3 Carbon Metallic Black/ Cinnamon with 38,000 miles.

I saw a real clean M3 with that color combo a few days ago. hands down beautiful.
