Thread necromancy time. I've been to several of these junkyards since, but today I went to Harry's in Hazleton and had a camera on me.

Harry's in Hazleton has a god damn cornucopia of mid 90s and earlier cars of all makes and models, mostly American. I stayed mostly in the import section to pillage A4's, A6's, B5 Passats and other germans of similar vintage of their delicious electrical connectors for my '55 so all pictures were taken from there.

You can see row after row after row of trucks and older 90s and earlier Toyotas/Hondas/Nissans. If you need a 1.6 liter D series, Harry's is the place for you!

And now for the interesting cars I saw. While I saw a Pulsar or two, I'd already snapped some pictures from earlier visit to that Jersey yard so I've only got one car for you today, but it's a damn beauty.

Volkswagen Type 3 Squareback! My german is a bit rusty, but this looks like a 1600 series.

I immediately recognized the tail lamps. My neighbor down the road in Jersey has a Karmann Ghia, built on the exact same platform using mostly the same components. He also has 4 Porsche 356's, including a frighteningly rare 356 Speedster, so after his stories and advice, I'm a bit sad I couldn't tell if this was a 1500 or 1600. Still, a damn beauty.

Volkswagen Automatic! Whoever bought this car decided that 3 speeds is enough for an engine that had the power output of a damp sock. However, since automatics were only introduced in 1968 to the Type 3, this narrows down the age of the car from 68-73.

And here's the flat 4, the second most popular engine in the world after the Chevrolet small block V8.

Finally, a shot of the people's interior. That pedal design is awesome looking, but stupid. Seems like it would suck pretty bad in poor weather, or mud, or anything that involves liquids of any kind.

Too funny seeing this car again...

I actually have the license plate from it hanging in my basement (I guess you took the pic before I got there!). I could only get one off the day I was there - by the time I made it back, the car was gone.

BTW, GI's is all but gone as well. They haven't let you walk out into the yard for over a year now, and the plan is for the site to become a Lowe's. That was to have already begun by now, so I wonder if the deal soured with the economy.

It used to be a great yard, with all the (now) open space filled with cars. They were never cheap like the PA U-Pull-Its, but convenient if you lived in NNJ.

As in, totally closed? I hadn't heard of any progress with Lowe's so I was beginning to wonder if that deal had gone south with the economy and they might continue on after all.

Funny enough, your uncle's junkyard is probably the closest one to me, but I never have reason to go over that way so I didn't know it even exists.

You could certainly find a set at a full-service yard, just highly unlikely to find a car that new at a U-Pull. Maybe a total-burn, but then your headlights would likely be "toast".

I went searching. I wonder if they'd started demolition yet - the flooding Passaic River might do the job for them!

Lowe’s

In other business news, Bastone reported on communication with Boswell Engineering about the construction of a Lowe’s building at the old GI Auto site, at the end of Bloomfield Avenue and Route 46. The former junkyard operations have been transferred to Paterson.

Demolition of existing structures is to begin in March. Remediation is in process. Reports will be submitted to the DEP, and copies will be provided to the township. Lowe’s has executed a long-term lease of the property. However, a second building which is part of this project, has not yet been leased. There will be a parking lot for both buildings.

Construction of Lowe’s is expected to begin June after DOT approvals are in place. Still in question are the cul-de-sacs on Maple Avenue, for which Lowe’s is prepared to make a financial contribution to construct, and the residence on 8 Maple Ave. for which Nielson inquired about stacking, tax revenues, and police and zoning reports.

Sandham suggested waiting for the DOT determination if a cul-de-sac or dead could be constructed on Maple Ave., then holding a public discussion for residentss concerns about excessive speeds, and home values.

The Bloomfield Avenue bridge is functionally obsolete. Lowe’s has agreed to replace the bridge as part of Morris County capital improvements.

Little thread bump for the already listed lots that I visited yesterday - i'll be visiting them all over the next 2 weeks and post any interesting finds if that's ok, if not just delete this post lol

Harrys in Pennsburg has ALOT of Neons.... as well as a good amount of mitsu eclipse, 1 murker, tons of 86-97 Accords, couple 4th gen Mustangs

joe's autoparts/ ez pull n save had some 240's, more 94-96 accords, mr2's, 3rd gen preludes, couple 4th gen preludes, some 1st gen impreza wagons/ outbacks

Harrys in Allentown - 1st gen impreza's, 3rd gen indegra's, random vw's and alot of 93-97 Accords (overall smallest lot of them all)

You can tell I mainly look for Honda's... so those were the most eye catching for me :/

If someone is looking for any specific makes- let me know and I'll at least keep an eye out for them.

Indeed, the Lowe's deal is dead. Given the remediation work that's been done to the site it seems unlikely that it will revert back to a junkyard. But who wants to build in a flood zone coupled with the few million in required road work to make the site accessible?

Updated: Lowe's Scraps Rt. 46 Plan

Proponents of the home improvement store said it would have created jobs, brought in tax revenue and cleaned up a junkyard.

A plan by Lowe's to build a 137,000-square-foot home improvement store plus a garden center on the site of a junkyard on westbound Route 46 in Montville has been scrapped, the company said.

A planner for Lowe's e-mailed the town last month saying the company was backing off its plan to build, Mayor Jim Sandham said.

Sandham said the e-mail from Lowe's didn't give a clear reason for the change of course. He said Montville officials would be seeing if anything can be done to save the project.

A spokeswoman for Lowe's on Friday said the project is off.

"Lowe’s has decided not to move forward with store development in this town," Stacey C. Lentz said Friday.

Rene Avila, the owner of the property at Route 46 and Old Bloomfield Avenue, the site of G.I. Auto Salvage Co., said he still plans to clean up and bring tenants to the property.

On Monday, Lowe's reported that its results for the quarter fell short of expectations and announced the closing of seven stores.

Montville residents raised concerns about traffic stemming from the project and Lowe's was adjusting its plans in June. Proponents of the plan said it would have created jobs, brought in tax revenue and cleaned up a junkyard in town.

Since you're not a Merkur guy, I won't give you too much grief for spelling it wrong. But was it a XR4Ti (3-door) or Scorpio (5-door)?

Feel free to keep the updates coming. Other foreign stuff I'd be interested in (that you might remember since they're not common) include Subaru Brat, Toyota Supra, Alfa Romeo, late 80's Volvo 7-series w/ 16V head.

And don't worry about Harry's Hazleton so much - dunno of you realize, but you can now search their inventory on-line.

ah damn... i knew i spelled it wrong

It was a 3 door. (pennsburg) It was green. The rear end and spoilers made it stick out like a sore thumb to grab my attention :D Honestly have never seen a 5 door in person.

at ez pull - there were some older Supra's at that lot as well. I recall seeing at least 1 or 2 mark III's but these were just in passing since I didn't want any more project ideas

I actually know of a 3 door Merkur sitting in a development in Delaware... it's been there for at least 10 years in a driveway.

I think it gets spelled (and pronounced) wrong more than right, even by people that own them!

Must have been a re-paint since green wasn't ever a factory color. Hmmm, there's a chance I might know the car - I don't suppose you took a picture, did you? I've yet to ever visit Pennsburg - damn, might have an excuse now.

Indeed it's mostly the Mark III Supra that I have an interest in. I've come across a couple of those at EZ over the years, but it's semi-rare. And yea, I know the feeling about forcing yourself to keep walking, else you end up finally finding the thing you went there for as the closing siren is howling. BTDT.

Hmmm, I might know that one too. What town? Some people think they're sitting on a gold mine, others are delusional about a "future restoration" which they haven't got a clue about where to start.

I ride my bike over that way if I'm going for a longer ride. Not that I'd go by bike to pick up a bumper or anything.

Should I tell "Uncle ______" that Jeff sent me?
