I wonder if people who are thinking about buying an 86/BRZ are cross-shopping with a Miata. I doubt it.

The next-gen 2013 or 2014 Miata will weigh less than 1 ton (2,205lbs) and probably have the 2.0L Sky-Activ engine from the new Mazda 3 which puts out 155hp in that car. They are hoping to set a new benchmark for power/weight. I can't wait for that. First-gen Miatas weigh 2,200-2,300lbs.

^ would be awesome, but with new safety regulations and standards i find this impossible IMO. i mean look at the fiat abarth thats 2,282 lbs and covers much less surface area. unless they skim by with plastic bucket racing seats, no air bags, and a dash made of paper IMO the days of the 2000lb car are dead unless you want a smart car which is ~1700 lbs.

but hey if they do it, i got a few kudos in line for them.

I believe so.

Or the law is written in such a way that makes it impossible to meet safety standards without them.

I strongly doubt this.

In order to make it that light, they'd have to build it out of fairly exotic and expensive materials.

The only way I can see such a weight as being a possibility in today's world is if Mazda somehow offered it up as a kit -- but that is so outlandish I don't think it is realistic.

Either way, it will end up being as (if not more -- probably more) expensive that the BRZ/86.

As a side note, the SkyActiv engine in a car that light would be an awesome DD. 50 MPG, at least.

Actually, the head of Mazda let it slip that the new MX5 may be combined with a lot of bits from the RX8 that's going out of production and it may feature a rotary.

You know I have always wondered why Mazda didn't ever decide to put the rotary engine into the miata. It always seemed like such a perfect platform for a rotary. Tiny as car what best way then to put a small ass rotary inside it and the fact that rotaries make no torque is even better since the car weighs nothing.

it just looks so perfect.

I mean why didnt they introduce it in the early 90s. Honestly its the only good performance engine mazda used in the 90s, why not whore it out? Similar to mitsubishi and the 4G63, or Toyota and the 2JZ/3S-GTE, nissan and the SR-20.

Saw this on another thread. A street viper from delaware that runs 7.11@201 always loved these cars, always told myself that if I ever get a car other than a mitsubishi, it would be a dodge viper, such badass cars.

yeah I've also always been a huge fan of Vipers since I was like 10 years old. A GTS like that one, in black like that one, has always been one of my dreams-that-will-not-come-true lol.

7 second street car WTF, no one can drive those cars stock, now imagine trying to turn in that lol. I was impressed when the civic recently broke the 10 second street car barrier, but 7 seconds, not needed and just way to insane. Tons of respect for the person/shop that is responsible though. I am curious to what "street" clutch he uses.
