Id recommend always taking a turbo to a shop. If you do not put the wheel back exactly as it came off it can be off balance and cause premature failure.

The turbo in that video was rebuilt in 2007, that's my daily driver so that was probably about 60,000 miles ago. The turbo is still in the car and I run 22 PSI. I put the old compressor wheel on a new turbine shaft with no balancing. Obviously there was no way to line up any thing since there was a new part. The compressor wheel is balanced by itself. The turbine is balanced by itself at the factory. Most turbo shops only give a one year guarantee so I made out pretty good. If you put one together without balancing, it can work and be reliable. I am not disagreeing with you that any spinning part should be balanced. Since both parts are balanced separately you can rebuild it without worrying about it blowing up.
Here is a great article on balancing, and here is the main point of the whole article:
In conclusion, the key to maximum life out of a turbocharger is proper selection of components, precision balancing of those components, and careful assembly of the turbo. An additional balancing operation performed on the completed turbo is not absolutely necessary in most cases, but it does provide a higher degree of confidence in the final product.
Quote:
