Joey Vento of Geno's Steaks has died

His story is great. A Philly legend. Coming from basically nothing and then building a shrine to steak and cheese at Passyunk & 9th.

I'm not even a huge fan of Geno's Steaks. But this is a sad day-
Joey Vento dies at age 71. God Bless!

Yea even though Geno's wasn't the best its still so sad. He did a lot of good things as far as charities go.

Such a shame to see. Any implication of what he died from?

I don't eat cheesesteaks but it seemed like he made a big difference in the city

1. ...is ridiculously labeled as such, just for speaking the truth and being honest about his opinions on certain matters.

2. ...a copycat who did it bigger and better and with more style than the competition, and who succeeded in building a hell of a business from nothing... all while doing what he could to give back to the city that he loved.

3. Enjoyment or hatred of a specific food is a personal opinion.

You know there had to be one to mention it.

My family has had the fortunate opportunity to do business with Joey and Geno for 25+ years. He may of came off as a hard ass and people obviously have their opinions on the man, but knowing him personally for a long time he was a great man that would do anything for you.

RIP Joey you will be missed.

the "ignorant racist" has donated more money to charities then you will probably make in your lifetime. grow up and respect the tragedy.

He got there second and threw up some flashy lights to steal customers away... Benevolent or not... I dont agree with his racist attitude...

Did his Italian family speak English when they arrived in America? Hell no...

I'm entitled to my opinion...

It's to early to argue, but your opinion is mis-guided. I only speak English. I can't talk to the carpet layers cause they speak Spanish, can't talk to the mason's cause they speak polish, can't talk to the painter's cause they speak turk or whatever turk's speak, the linoleum guy speaks Japaneese, framer's speak brazillian, so on. How the hell is this house ever gonna get built?

Most common uniting force in a nation is it's language, a single recognized language.

And I agree, you are entitled to your opinion.

guess what, when you open your own business you can run it how you please. he had the right to refuse anyone he wanted to.

did his family speak english when they arrived? i cant comment on that because i dont know but im more than willing to bet that they learned the language once they were here. i think you fail to realize the point of that sign, which is for people that come here and refuse to learn the language but want everything changed for them because they refuse to change.

your entitled to your opinion, but your still an asshole

Vento said that no one has been refused service for not speaking English, but said, "If I can't understand you, you might not get the sandwich you thought you ordered."

So how bout dem apples?

When you immigrate, you assimilate. Period. My ancestors did it and so did yours.

If I ran my own business I would absolutely refuse service to anyone who wouldn't even attempt to speak English. What's ignorant is moving to a foreign country and expecting that they adapt to you.
