Collector car registration

I will probably be buying a 91 Miata later this week that is a special edition. Only 4000 were made, and I found out that I can get it registered as a collector's vehicle.

My question is, does anybody have collector status on their vehicle? The process seems pretty straight forward except for this part

Quote:
Submit a letter from the vehicle manufacturer, recognized car club or a collector organization attesting to the vehicle’s limited production status. Must be printed on official letterhead
Has anybody gone through this process, and can give me guidance on where to start? I'm trying to find either a contact number or email to Mazda corporate so I can try to get this started.

I would think an appraisal service would be able to validate and give you the proper documentation to do so.

But I honestly have no idea. Just a thought.

youre restricted to the number of miles you can drive it per inspection period...
dont do it unless you plan on daily drivin her.. i believe its 3k per year
not to mention whatever else the insurance company poses as a restriction on your policy as a collector..

I already know about the mileage limit. I have my jeep for daily duties. From what I've heard, the cost of insurance for collector cars is much less than regular because of the mileage limit. I was just curious if I had to contact Mazda, or if documentation from miata.net would work.

You don't need documentation of it being 'limited'. A guy on the local forums was having problems with his car not communicating with emission ODB2 devices and after a bunch of money dropped on trying to fix it to work (wiring, computers, etc) he just got it registered as collectible.

He said something about having receipts for any work done/parts purchased for the car in the last year to show tax was paid, had to be visually modified, and they do an inspection like what would be done for a reconstructed vehicle. Think he said, all once and done, it was ~$380, and he said he doesn't have to get it registered (which I question) and only has safety inspection now.

And that was on a 1999 Ford Escort ZX2.

You can have an appraisal done or go thru a national Miata club... As for insurance the policies will vary some will only allow 3k per year and no daily use. Some like mines will give 5k and some daily use. Haggerty costs a bit more (around double) but has unlimited use/miles.

I pay $320 for full coverage and $20K stated value for my GTS. Best move I have made, saving tons of dough. You dont need to get collector car status to get the insurance also. They cover most anything unique, modded etc...

I think NJ might be a little different. Once I obtain the collector status the only sort of inspection I need is a mileage check.

In regards to insurance, I plan on insuring it as limited use. It won't see winter or rainy days. Plus you have to have it as limited use to obtain collector status

My dad and I have a bunch of classic Minis and all you have to do for historic plates is send in pics to the DMV and get the plates in trenton. The insurance and dmv never check the mileage on them. I think classic would be the same way.

It's a 91, it's not old enough or I probably would have done that.

I decided to just register as normal so I don't have to worry about the mileage limit.

I think any proof of limited numbers or limited registered numbers or something like that can be used. I know a bunch of people that did this with their FDs and one guy used a spreadsheet of how many cars were produced and he got his car in.

just go to dmv ask for a collector's vehicle voucher and then you take your car to inspection site and let them verify the mileage and done. i did that on my 97 240sx

I have my gvr4 insured as a collector and its like $75 dollars a year for full coverage. Its registered as a regular car right now but i plan on going back to the dmv soon and having the registration changed as well. I think i remember the form saying that you need collectors insurance before being able to get the collectors registration.
