you do understand that the 255/40/18 is taller than stock diameter and will throw off your speedometer and decrease your final drive ratio, right?

I would've gone 265/35. 245/40 would have been closest to stock diameter.

yes but I don't care

plus there is not that big of a difference between 245/40s and 255/40s the height is the same, the width is the only difference and stock tire height is 45, it's not going to affect it that much

It is an 18inch wheel, where the stock size is a 17inch, so the aftermarket diameter of the wheel and tire mounted will ultimately be slightly bigger than stock, but a 17inch wheel in a 45 tire isn't much smaller than an 18inch wheel in a 40 tire.

I don't think you quite understand the nature of sidewall height markings. The sidewall height, or "series" listed on the tire is determined by a ratio of sidewall height compared to tread width.

For example, a 40 series in a 205 width tire is going to have a significantly shorter sidewall than a 40 series in 255.

To get specific to your particular tires, a hankook ventus evo in the stock size (235/45/17) is 25.4" total height, while the tires you purchased in 255/40/18 have a total height of 26". That's over a half inch shorter than the stock tires and is more than enough to be noticeable.

Your rpms will be lower per mph than they used to be and your low rpm/off-the-line acceleration will be negatively affected as well. However, assuming you have enough hp to overcome the drag, you will have a higher top speed.

A 265/35/18 (25.3") or a 245/40/18 (25.7) would have been better choices from a gearing and speedo accuracy perspective. Most guys in the GR chassis WRX and STIs with 18x9.5s are running the 265/35s for that reason.

edit: all tire specs were found at tirerack.com

good info, thanks man!

the reason I went with a 40 size and not a 35 size, is because on my previous car I was running a 35 and it was a fairly rough ride. So i opted for the 40 instead of the 35 to have a little bit better ride quality...figuring a little bit more of a tire, a slightly better ride.

I never really thought about the speedo accuracy or any of the other technicalities, but that doesn't really bother me

I put my wheels and tires on last night, what a difference from the stockers running snow tires, like night and day. With the 255 tires the car feels like it is on rails.

Proper pictures soon to come, will post a quick cell phone pic later.

Nit picking bothers me

To put your mind at ease about the speedo being off the difference between the readings of the 235/45R17 and the 255/40R18 is less then 3 MPH at 100 MPH. This is less then the underclock subaru uses on there vehicle speed sensor. All this means that if your speedo says your doing 65 and the limit is 65 you'll still clock under 65.
