Once upon a time my tank had glass lids... until the cat decided to smash them by sitting her fat ass on them. Now I have the long plastic double light with a 48" fluorescent single bulb. That will hold up to any cat as long as your center support will.

My tank is horrendous and I should be ashamed. That said my current crop of fish is invincible. I have 3 or 4 guppies I think (they make babies and die off here and there so I never know how many are around). A giant gourami who is afraid of me for no reason, a flying fox, 2 loaches, and a couple danios. I'm wishing they all die so I can convert to salt but as I said, they're invincible.

If you are near a Petco, you can take them in. Petco accepts fish and puts them up for adoption.

lets see if this attached image works from another forum...

found this guy in my tank...

slight surprise only because i figured the three would be dead... turns out it's a "ninja shrimp", capable of changing it's color to blend in and somewhat rare in the states due to it's difficult breeding requirements.

also picked up another 2 tiger barbs and am contemplating 2 blue ram cichlids

ie:

these are dwarf cichlids and rather docile in comparison to their larger brethren

I have been wanting to do a fish tank set up, but I know I am lazy so it would just go to waste, is there any self contained setups that i wont have to do much for? I have a 110 gallon tank that I bought a while ago and i wanted to make a stand for and set it up but the upkeep is keeping me from doing it.

i havent seen any kits for something that large... and upkeep takes work, depending on what you're keeping.

i dose fertilizers in my tank every other day, keep a check on co2 levels and run the lights off of a timer. not to mention cleaning the tank or scooping out dead plant material that is floating. other than that... it's "low maintenance"

give me your 110g. that'd make me happy! and my girlfriend mad haha

It isn't a ton of work. Maybe 30 minutes a week. Water evaporates and you fill it every week or 2. Once your tank is established you don't really gotta check your water too much. Wipe the glass down every week. Nothing to major. Once every few months just do a 25% water change. Change the filter every 2 weeks.

There are more hardcore people that say you gotta do it more then that but we are running a tank thats almost 4 years old and don't do much for it other then clean it really good once a year, add water as it evaporates, replace filters, and wipe down the glass when it starts to turn green.

you've got a cichlid tank. those are easy... i'd neglect mine for months and the fish would do fine. a heavily planted tank, such as mine, require more work. I measure ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and kH. i have a pressurized co2 system set up as well as a canister filter which is a PITA to clean. I also dose macro and micro fertilizers m-w-f to ensure my plants have the nutrients to grow and cross my fingers that they use enough of it so that algae doesnt bloom. i also have to worry about uprooting my plants due to the top soil that is under the eco-complete gravel... if that happens i get a large amount of ammonia entering the system which is going to create an algae bloom and dead fish.

if i had expensive fish i'd have to do more work. if i had a reef tank, i'd have to do more.

a rock tank with cichlids is as easy as they come. just toss in a pleco and you're good to go. cichlids are hardy fish... really hardy fish. and some of them are quite beautiful. i got tired of the bland rock tank. i'm having a lot more fun with my tank and will sit down in the basement and watch it for 10-15 minutes at a time because it's entertaining. my cichlids... not so much

Ive been wanting a small tank...10 gallon maybe? Ide prefer fresh water, just for the simplicity factor. Not sure what kind of fish I'de like though. Im going to look around for a used stand/tank.

do a google search for 10g nano freshwater... you can get very elaborate with a 10g. i think more so than a larger tank because the environment is harder to control and more thought is made in setting it up and picking things out.

personally... i want a 300g+ at some point to do a proper planted tank!

the fish store only had one of those orange ones... the female was MIA so i picked him up and a male and female blue ram. they'll be going in the tank soon... and no, they don't look like those pictures yet :/ gotta give them a few months i think

Too bad your not African. We want to get rid of some. There is way too much dad on daughter action with our blue/grey fishies. We also want to add more color to the tank but its slightly overcrouded. Maybe I'll just donate to Petco/Petsmart one of these weekends.

community tanks are so much more interesting. besides, the tiger barbs are close enough to african cichlids... they're like a gang of third world children beating people up for candy. put the dwarf cichlids in the tank and they immediately began picking on them till the blue male started showing off some of his colors and flairing his fins.
