and i don't think it has to do with being branded previously, but having to do with a bible passage from "the lord" about not making markings on yourself. but that applies to orthodox jews.

being jewish anymore is more like being a race for the most part anyway. at least from what i've seen and experienced.

I believe the verse you are referring to is Leviticus 19:28
"You shall not make any cuts in your body for the dead nor make any tattoo marks on yourselves: I am the LORD."

The premise of this is that the pagan nations surrounding the nation of Israel in those times would mark/tattoo themselves to appease their gods. When a family member would die they would cut themselves as a sacrifice to the gods they worshiped on behalf of the one who had died. The God of Israel did not want this to be a mark of His people. For the children of Israel to mark themselves would be mixing Jewish law and pagan tradition, which was a serious sin in that day. God wanted a people separate from the world and not marked physically to show their devotion but by their lifestyle and practices.

I am also non-denominational. Being such, we do not take old testament law and apply it to our lives today. They lived under law and we live under grace. While there is no verse that says "Thou shalt not get a tattoo", there are several instances of application in the new testament such as Romans 12:1, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, etc. So no, if someone walked into my church with tattoos he/she would not be thrown out haha. While there is no direct scripture against it, most new testament believers would agree there is not much "spiritual edification" in it.

No offense taken. I'm usually the only jew people know. So I have to answer every question ever and people never know how to treat me around the holidays, which I don't even care for. Turns out nice though, this year I got a ridiculous amount of Christmas/Chanukah gifts from my co-workers because they didn't want me to feel left out. Win!
