What to look for in a high mileage vehicle?

I found a 2004 FX4 Ford F150 for sale with 214911 miles for $7500. I am going to test drive it Monday. What kind of things should I look for in a test drive with a truck with that many miles on it? It is incredibly clean with no dents or anything wrong on the body. Just curious what others think about buying a truck with that many miles on it.

That's too many miles for the price. You can do better for $7.5K.

I agree, it's not like it's even a diesel to warrant that price.

I agree with the others- i wouldnt buy that for that price. But to answer your question- Id be mostly concerned about maintenance records on something so new with such high miles. You can only assume that a vehicle that young with 200k on it is PRIMARILY highway miles. Given that, its not surprising the car still looks to be in good shape- the thing id be concerned with is the motor and trans, since thats basically all that was being worked during those highway miles. Id look for records of oil changes and other maintenance, as well as have the truck compression tested if feasible. Things like tire condition, brake pad condition, air filter dirtiness, and oil color can all tell a tale of how the vehicles life has been up until then.

Well I probably will end up getting it. It is really clean and would save me from having to make payments on new truck. Plus I don't drive more than 5000 in my old truck.

A lot of miles. Pick up something a little older and less miles for less than that.

Im totally in agreement with you on the fact that you can get a KILLER deal on a fairly new car if it has high miles but is clean. I just got my buddy his '02 Subaru w/ 160k on it for 3500.. and it drove like it had 30k on it. High mileage can really kill the value of a car, but if the miles are predominantly highway miles, you can really come out on top with a car that has high mileage, but youd never know it.

But at the same time.. $7500 for a 200k mile Ford is not that great of a deal.

Id rather buy a 10 yr old 130k mile chevy.

I found a 1997 Dodge Ram that looks to be in good condition from pics, and has 163k miles. They only want $4995.

Ford modular engines are tanks. Easily 300k BEAT UP. Look at old cop cars that become taxis, then you see rolling around the hood for another 5 years.

Very good truck at a very good price.. And the miles on that still makes it a child.
